I have seen this a few times, one recent with Fowler Construction ($200,000) and always think the same thing, how in the heck a so called business man not miss that kind of money, and does not check his/her own statements at some point? Either very lazy, or very dumb, or both!

If she's the book-keeper then she's the one balancing the check book and if her boss doesn't check it at least once a month, then she figures she can get away with it. This was a four month investigation, so they must have noticed something in the last 6 months to call the police, good on them.

This crap happens all of the time, especially in a business where the money earners are so busy they have to trust their staff. Lots of Docotor's offices have had office personnel rip them off. Like sittingin anoffice of a defunct group watching soaps sucking up any last dime.

Face it! Most entrepenuar types are damn the torpedo personalities. They are pushing the business. They don't even realize the people with this capability. The lifestyle is a big thing to look at. Has anything changed with the house, vehicle, recreational activities, jewerly, etc. Are they spenders in dire financial straights?
Three things to observe:
Financial Pressure

Opportunity(who is signing off on the bank reconciliation and who is signing the checks?

reasoning(I will pay it back, or I should make more money)

You should always pay the financial person well, that is not the place to cut corners.
If you have a trustworthy one, do not allow them to walk out the door. Give them what they are comparably being offered elsewhere. In this climate, trustworthiness is rare. Make an ethics test a requirement during the interview process. It is amazing how many people cannot get past this since ethics can be so individualized. What may seem okay to one person, can be totally wrong to another.
And you definitely do not want someone handling your money who does not have a little voice barometer keeping them in line.
