No. It would be different if they were paid $2.13 an hour like servers in restaurants, or if they did more than grab previously prepared food and put it in a bag.

If there is a jar on the counter, I usually drop the change in it.

alot of places pay their carryout/curbside to go employee's 4.50 an hour!!! remember that next time you dont want to tip - they rely on it just like servers do, and carryout employee's do alot more than you might assume, try talking to one when you go to pick up food. they'll tell you!

If you're at a fast food place, it's not necessary. If you phone a restaurant, it's completely different. Usually, in a restaurant, a server is pulled from her duties to enter the takeout order into a computer. The kitchen folks still have to prepare the food normally, and then take extra steps to package it for travel. Then the server has to open all the packaging to make sure the order is correct, plus carefully bag everything and make certain that anything the customer could concieveably ask for is included, such as salt & pepper, extra napkins, crackers, silverware, etc. Once the order leaves the building, the server can't rush to the kitchen to fulfill the request for more ketchup, for example. Servers actually spend more time double-checking and triple-checking the orders before they leave, because there is no chance to correct a mistake once it's gone. As a restaurant manager, I feel it would be nice if people ordering takeout from full-service restaurants would recognize these facts, and perhaps acknowledge the efforts with a small tip. True, the server does not have to deal with drink refills and clearing the table, so a full percentage of tip is not generally expected. But I can't tell you how many times customers will make our servers count out the change to the very last penny. It's very sad to see one of my people work hard on an order to make it perfect and, with an amount due of, say, $14.98, have the customer stand there with his or her hand out, waiting for the two pennies from the $15 handed to the server. Trust me, it happens all the time, and it was happening even before the economy tanked. There are some chains that automatically add a gratuity to all takeout orders, and that will be reflected in your bill - check to see. But our restaurant does not condone such a practice. We leave it up to the public to do the right thing by our servers. Unfortunately, the right thing rarely happens.

I order take out form resturants ALOT, in that case you betcha, from fast food, no,

Anonymous said...

No, but I am generous tipper for food delivery to my house.

Anonymous said...

I have done , but not on a regular basis. Mainly because a tip is for extra ordinary service , of which very rarely you get at a fast food. Heck many I can't hardly understand !!

Anonymous said...

I do, and generously, and i am always disappointed I did. OUTBACK in Salisbury always forgets something, bread, sides, etc.. and I tell myself "never again". Then a week or two goes by and I'm back, over tipping their stupid little faces 'cause i know they will never make it on their own...

Nope, just deliveries and sit down restuarants, who do you tip with take out, the cashier and would the person bagging it, get the tip?

Anonymous said...

no way!!! I have to check the order to make sure it is right; if it's not right, I don't get a discount for their mess up!!

FYI, Sonic pays less that minimum wage to it's servers and expects the pubilc to make up the difference with tips. If y'all don't tip a sonic server, who brings the food to you in your car ("fast" food, or not), you are shortchanging him/her and should be ashamed. They servers over there talk about all the cheapskate college kids all the time.

anonymous 4:25, you need to read the question all over again.

Joe,

All of Sonic's food it "take out", there is no inside dining. Some eat in the car, some take it with them. My comment is the same.

My condolences to you and your family on the recent passing of your mother. I remember when my mom passed and it was a very difficult time. Have faith that she is now being rewarded for all of her good acts and that you will see her again. My pain got better with the passage of time, but it never goes away.

God Bless you and your family at this difficult time.
