Mother Charged With Leaving Son Alone In Car At Delaware Park

Location: Parking lot of Delaware Park, 777 Delaware Park Boulevard, Wilmington, Delaware

Date of Occurrence: Sunday, October 11, 2009, at 6:30 p.m.

Suspect(s): A 33-year-old woman from Wilmington, Delaware (whose name is being withheld to protect the identify of her son the victim)

Resume: Yesterday evening, at approximately 9:00 p.m., Troopers were called to Delaware Park for a report of a 12-year-old child who was left in the car alone in the parking lot.

This incident came to light when an alert Delaware Park security guard was on routine patrol and located the male child alone in a vehicle in the parking lot. This vehicle was parked away from the main building and there was no way the parent(s) would be able to see the child from inside the facility.

The boy was taken back to the security office and Troopers were called in to investigate. It was ultimately determined that the boy and his mother arrived at this location at approximately 6:30 p.m. The mom went into the facility and left her son alone in the parking lot for over two hours.

The boy’s mother was located in the main building and brought to the security office. She told authorities that she came to Delaware Park to win some money to take her son to the movies.

Thanks to the security official, the child was unharmed. The Division of Family Services was contacted and advised of the incident.

The mother was released on a $500.00 unsecured bond. The boy was turned over to a family member.

I thought 12 years old was old enough to babysit? How is it criminal to leave a 12 year old unattended? Seems a little over the top to me.

I believe 13 is the age for babysitting and anything above 8 can be left alone at the discretion of the parent. Though this piece of trash went in to gamble and left her son in the car, arresting her is a little over the top.

This is stupid...and is just another way that these so called agencies waste taxpayer dollars. Ok so the idiot went in to gamble while the boy was in the car outside...dumb..yes but child abuse..abandonment...no. Bad judgement is what I see, but you don't take a child away from its mother\parents for that. Give her a warning and let it be done!

Just another example of why we need to license parents before they are allowed to procreate!

I feel sorry for this kid.He/she is obviously used to Mom doing this kind of thing.Still want slots people?

Slots have nothing to do with this woman being a POS excuse for a parent. She would have left him in the car if it was bingo at the fire hall.

Sorry but leaving this little boy in the car this long while mommy feeds her slot addiction is abuse. She must have left him with his electronic toys to keep him accupied.

Makes my blood boil. Can't believe anyone is excusing this behaviour.

Lets build some more casinos, end justifies the means,(right???).

@2:08 of course it is abuse and neglect. Let's put the blame where it belongs, on the parent. The casino didn't tell her to leave the kid in the car, she made that decision. That is the problem with society in general, NO ONE takes responsibility for their own actions. EVERYTHING is the fault of someone else. There is a 12 step program for everything, gambling included. Should she be receiving a disability check for her addiction as well? Lock her up and charge her with abuse and neglect but don't blame the casinos. Let's be a little realistic.

Gambling is evil.

Is that a misprint? 12 years old, heck she could have left a 12 year old home alone for goodness sake. The crime is plain stupidity!

Dumb move but abuse? The kid is 12! Chances are he would have been sitting at home playing video games anyway. Dumb? yes. Criminal? No
