Why Was Jim Ireton Elected Mayor?

If you ask the vast majority of those that voted for him, you would be told that Salisbury voters elected Jim Ireton mayor because they were concerned about crime, taxes, city services and wasteful government spending.  Yet, if you listened to Ireton this morning on WICO you would walk away thinking that Ireton believes that he was elected to promote ObamaCare and shill for “his friend” Frank Kratovil.

While comparing voters to an orchestrated mob, Ireton accused the very people who elected him mayor of being mindless tools of the right.  If he honestly believes that, it’s his right.  I’m also disappointed.

Regardless of his personal opinions, Ireton needs to focus on the issues that got him elected.  He needs to handle obvious problems in his own house, such as who is leaking personnel documents to the press and the Barrie Comegys house blog.

School starts in less than a month Jim.  Salisbury voters expect you be working for them, not campaigning for Frank Kratovil.

that right mr. ireton, you "will" work for us or we'll be firing you too, oo baby that's right we "will" Fire you too. Just always remember "We" make the decisions here and "you" go do what we tell you to, just like any other employer/employee relationship. Are we clear? thank you.

He is a complete Joke, in way over his head. Now your stuck with him. I know what we can show a movie and grap some stimulous (tax-payer) money and everyone will cheer me, you need a MAN in the OFFICE, not this guy.

G. A. Harrison said...

Do either one of you honestly believe that Gary Comegys would do better? I don't, yet.

Jim simply needs to focus on what he was elected to do, rather than worry about making a group of Barrie Comegys hangovers happy and worrying about Frank Kratovil, Barack Obama, et al. Kratovil will have millions to spend next year. He really doesn't need Jimmy's help.

Jim-Beau:

Can I get my vote back. After wasting it for the Louweasel two years ago, doing it for you is sickening!

Yout career is in education, not elected government.

I cannot believe that I was hoodwinked AGAIN!!! After Louise smith I thought NEVER again, and look what happens. At the least I expected Ireton to weed out morons like Pick,Chambers and Oland. I expected some heat put on Webster to steop up to the plate. Instead just more liberal horsecrap. You are one and done Ireton.

Anonymous said...

Should have thrown our support behind Bob Caldwell. Ireton is just another Louise Smith style bait and switch.

Anonymous said...

His dancing around on the issues and ducking Bill's softball questions was disqusting (no longer just disappointing), especially the sewage treatment plant problem.

We're still stuck in Salisbarrie.

Anonymous said...

Give him some more time before judgment is done. A lot of mess to straighten out. I do agree some more things may have been able to be done, but that is looking from the outside in. So I am still waiting and I do not think Comegys was the answer at all. If Ireton took some time to promote his ideas, at least he is doing out in the open so you can have the chance to critize it instead of behind closed doors like the last admin. Be thankful for that people.

Kratovil has over $500,000 in his war chest for the next election He ahs got to be stopped but im not sure Andy Harris can do it or Id want him to. He will funning for his senate seat at the same time and opeing a practice at PMRC. SO i sont think he really know who he wants to work for!

Anonymous said...

When will Salisbury go back to party based primaries and general elections?

Anonymous said...

Be so thankful for the crumbs the politicians throw to you. You got to be kidding me.

anonymous 10:59, ENOUGH of that BS!

We have given Jim time.

I spoke with Chuck Cook, (Jim's right hand man) a month ago and he assured me within 2 weeks Jim would make his move on at least 2 Department Heads.

It was yet ANOTHER LIE on their behalf, asking everyone, (including me) to be patient.

In the mean time, Kratovil's and Ireton't right hand man stole photos from me, hads them published on Democratic Sites without ever asking and took credit for the photos himself.

I'll never trust these people again and Chuck Cook is a thief and a liar.

It's no wonder he's hooked up with Ireton and Kratovil. ANYTHING to win Jim, right!

I am extremely disappointed in Ireton, as are MANY of the powers to be in Wicomico County.

We love Jim Ireton like a Brother but Jim Ireton has no STONES to get the job done. What has he done since he's been in Office. TALK, ALL TALK. He's a Barrie Tilghman in grag.

Don't blame me, I voted for Bob Caldwell!

"Help is on the way" -- but don't hold your breath.

Debbie or Terry, would one of you please run for Mayor next time? At least both of you aren't afraid to get the job done as both of you have more balls than the current Mayor and that is a compliment.

Anon 1100 -
Andy Harris can't run for Congress AND his Maryland Senate seat at the same time. By running for the US House he is giving up his senate seat.

Joe -
I think that Ireton does deserve time ... for some things.

Obviously the crime problem can't be solved in a few months. Unfortunately, I don't think much will be accomplished as long as he kowtows to a police chief with a record like Allan Webster's.

We'll have to wait until next spring to see what he does on taxes, and spending.

However, he has plenty of opportunities to make his mark NOW. There are redundant positions in city government that could be eliminated. There are cost saving measures that could be implimented. Unfortunately, Ireton all but admitted this morning that it's John Pick who is running this city.

has there been any action on Paul Wilber and those fees?!

Is Ireton on the Dem. Central Committee? -- if so, he should have resigned already.

His support came mostly from Salisbury's coalition for Obama, in which he was a key player and got lists, etc. that he used in running for mayor.

That support has largely evaporated, now that they realize Salisbury's issues are completely different from those that motivated them to vote first for Obama and then Ireton, and the City activists who supported him are outraged that he has not done what he promised on department heads, Richaerd Insley, etc. and has become a shill for Urban Salisbury (downtown property owners).

Anonymous said...

GA- I thought he could run for both like Liberman ran for Senate and VP. So who is running for Harris 's seat if he is giving it up? What about his practice at PMRC?

Anonymous said...

Linking himself to that Kratovil isn't the brightest thing for Ireton to do.

G. A. Harrison said...

Anon 1126 -
Yes, Jim is a member of the Dem Central Committee. As for his support coming from Obamaites, that isn't correct. Simply look at the detailed election returns. Ireton garnered most of (but not all) of the same support received by Debbie Campbell. He might have received lists, etc. from the Obama camp, but they didn't put him in office. Those Obama voters simply didn't vote in the city election. It was primarily older homeowners and families that put him in office - many of the same people now protesting ObamaCare.

Anon 1128a -
I honestly don't know.

Anon 1128b -
I agree.

Anonymous said...

But during the campaign he LISTED things and spoke to people and LISTED the people he spoke to and SPOKE about the lists to the people he listed! How could he not be the greatest thing ever?

11:26 - I agree Jim should have already resigned from the Dem Central Com and from the Teachers Union Board to. Not only does it look bad and have potential conflicts, with his teachers job, how much time can he devote to all this political pandering? Right on GA, - Ireton needs to Focus, Focus, Focus.

WOW.....I run a company that I took over from another "line his pockets" owner....and there were alot of things that was carried over that I was unknowing about....but had to go along with...until the contracts/deals ran out....YOU CANNOT CHANGE A COMPLETE CLUSTER F**K IN 100 days..

Joe you are such a turncoat....thats righ a TURNCOAT! He cannot fire anyone without cause.....and just because you think its right to out some of these "people that YOU dont like" doesnt mean its that easy....they cannot hire anyone to fill a position until a postion is fully open....so that right to appeal a firing or filing a lawsuit have to be handled.....I was a turncoat just like all of you all who elected someone and in 100days think the world should have changed....but thats not GOVERNMENT LIFE.....and if anyone here has worked for the government in any way ... you should understand that....you elected Mayor Ireton now give him is due......You same people kept Barnnie Tilman in office for 12 years that is 4,380 days and you expect a bright reconditioning in 100 days....So lets get this right......he has had 4,280 days less to fix it than what was caused to screw it up Its so easy for something to get broke but takes so much more to fix it....I have a feeling Mayor Ireton got an ace in the hole and will have the last laugh...as for you who are Haters...Well keep on hating..but when Joe, Debbie backstabber, or Terrible Terry.....wanna do some good for community JUST SHUT UP and DO SOMETHING other than point your fingers at someone else

But I do love your blog Joe
btw you know Joe you could run for Mayor yourself next time....I'd love it....

anonymous 11:54, thank you for your comment.

You want "cause," how about taking a look at the crime rates in the City since he became Chief of Police.

I have said this for years about Chiefy Webster, HE SUCKS AT WHAT HE DOES!

Anitra Pyrkle is CAUSE. The prostitute months ago where the murderer was never found, is CAUSE. The murder of the gentleman at the Shell Gas Station is CAUSE, once again still on the loose.

The recent asttempted Bank Robbery was solved because the guys Wife called it in on her own Husband.

Then there's the Ted Shea shooting with VIDEO FOOTAGE, yet it was never released, (nor was the gas station tape) and those people are stil on the loose.

CAUSE, I'm sure hundreds of people can come on here as victims like Ann and give you CAUSE.

Did Tilghman have CAUSE on Dykes?

Anonymous said...

The Dems are miscalculating and insulting their constituents whom they are supposed to represent. I guess the new Salisbury "partisan" mayor is to.

Anonymous said...

Tilghman's firing of Dykes is a whole different situation. For one thing, the charter/code has been changed since that time. The mayor can only initiate proceedings - the council has to agree. And you know the council, as it currently stands, will not agree.

Anonymous said...

Ireton hasn't done anything since he has been in. What has he done? From this blog, I seen him attending all these party events. He hasn't changed a thing Joe. I see more pics of this guy shaking hands and walking around. Joe, what has he done? Can you post his accomplishments while in?

Anonymous said...

When will you people learn? If you vote for a democrat, that is what you are going to get. If you like what you see in Washington, vote for the local Dems. If you want change for the BETTER, you have to vote republican or third party. Liberals are just tax and spend politicians that cover and protect each other. They all need to be replaced, including Ireton.

Anonymous said...

If Tilghman started the proceedings to fire Chief Dykes, then why can't Ireton start the proceeding to fire Webster? Dead bodies keep piling up!

joealbero said...

He's made a lot of friends but there's been nothing concrete.

While I agree that some things take time, Jim is without a doubt doing a lot of photo ops and patting "My Friend, let me repeat, my Friend Frank Kratovil" speeches.

The position has gone to his head, I hate to say, and he's lost focus on his campaign promisses. His 10 year BS plan on the river is a load of crap. He won't be in Office longer than 4 years and no other fool is going to continue selling dog sh!t to the citizens when it comes to cleaning up the river.

There's a $45,000,000.00 lawsuit against the City right now they're ignoring with the public. There's a $84,000,000.00 WWTP that isn't working and 1/2 of it has been shut down. THAT will clean up the river!!!!!

So I agree, Jim has had plenty of time to make changes but he hasn't.

I'll say this as well. OPEN YOUR EYES JIM IRETON, you just received quarterly documents from PAM OLAND and all three documents DO NOT MATCH number wise. There's grounds for termination, yet Jim isn't experienced enough to SEE these things.

Anonymous said...

Ireton got into the game fully aware of the mess he was inheriting, and any reasonable person wouldn't expect him to fix it overnight.
However, I am not quite sure what steps, if any, he's taken since in office to lay a good foundation for new direction and effective remedies to city problems.

Salisbury is fast-approaching San Fransisco in it's left-wing policies

10:59 just how much time do you think is acceptable? 6 more months? a full year? How much?

G. A. Harrison said...

Anon 1154 -

Please start by READING. If you would note my 1111 comment, I listed several things that he could be doing NOW!

As for needing "CAUSE" to get rid of someone like Allan Webster, that's simple. Webster's record is plenty for starters; however, his recent public attacks on Ireton and other elected officials in the press are ample cause for his dismissal.

Sure, he can whine. He can sue. However, do you really believe that either Comegys or Smith want to face re-election with a rising crime rate and their refusal to allow a sitting mayor to solve the problem? I don't think so.

Ireton can't be expected to fix the world in 100 days. However, he can be expected to address some of the problems that he campaigned on. So far, the only things that he has addressed have involved spending money. As a businessman, you should realize that you don't succeed by spending the most money. You succeed by driving revenue and being the most efficient in spending your money.

Just another case of "You get what you vote for."

How's that Dem thing workin' out for ya, now?

joealbero said...

anonymous 12:37, let me ask you this. If YOU were the parent of the murdered prostitute, the shell gas station owner or even Anitra Pyrkle, how much time would YOU need to make a final decision?????

Anonymous said...

Joe, its 12:37 - that was exactly my point that I was trying to get 10:59 to answer? I would have made my changes my first week - starting off with doing what Barrie did when she first came aboard - fire the police chief. You watch, there will be people a year from now saying "let's give him just a little more time" .....pitiful.

To the jackass who referred to "backstabber Debbie" and "Terrible Terry," you are ... a jackass!

I support Mayor Ireton AND Debbie Campbell AND Terry Cohen. They are three separate people with three different approaches.

When I read Terry's letter today, thanks to the leaky Times, I thought, "What is the fuss about?"

She did her job, relayed concerns and asked questions. Other than the personnel file line, her letter is nothing like Debbie's, so what's the basis for the great conspiracy theory about the two of them? Terry's letter seemed to be caused by a meeting.

As for Jim, I didn't like his comments that make this sound like Debbie and Terry vs. Webster, but I guess he was trying to be neutral. Not sure it worked because my friend asked me if Jim was "turning on them."

I do think Jim needs more time to deal with the mess he was handed. But I also wish he wouldn't let the two council people who look out for citizens get trashed in the paper.

Anonymous said...

It is becoming apparent to many that Jim Ireton is mostly fluff. Once again the voters and many of his financial supporters, including myself were sold a bill of goods.

He needs to request volunteers to serve on a community action committee with a goal of reviewing necessary logistical and personnel changes within the city's overall operations. A report by this committee should provide the political impetus that Ireton could use to bring about the operational improvements this city so sorely needs. However, as someone remarked earlier, he just may be way over his head....running even a small city is a very large challenge, even for a classroom teacher.

Oh, by the way Obese One, why didn't you say anything about the Daily Times articles and updates after all those letters allegedly went out? How about WBOC & WMDT? Yeah, because you're sick in the head and need serious mental help.

I always firmly believe that if you are elected to a local office (Mayor or City Council) that your allegiance remains to the citizens and to the town. Not to a higher political party. I don't live in Salisbury, but I am ashamed of the way that town has been run. Ireton ran on the concept of fixing the problems in town. And though it will take a few years to make these changes for the better a reality. He has shown the citizens nothing to make them believe it is going to happen. He should not be doing anything but serving the citizens (the ones that elected him, and the ones that didn't). Stay out of other Politics, it is corrupt enough, and what you say won't make a difference. Be the Mayor the City of Salisbury needs.

Anonymous said...

I want to also add that the best Politicians on the local level are the one's where you don't know what party they are from. In Ocean City you never really know which side of the aisle the Mayor and City Council are, because that's the way a local government is suppose to run. It's not run on this awfully flawed two party system. Nothing ever gets done right in Washington this way. In a town like Salisbury you need the elected officials to run and do whats best for the city. Not run it like it is congress. I think it's BS and I feel sorry for the citizens of this town...
