Courtroom Yawner Jailed For Six Months

(Aug. 10) -- As Clifton Williams sat in the courtroom in Joliet, Ill., awaiting his cousin's sentencing on drug charges, little did he know he would soon be the one in jail.

As Judge Daniel Rozak sentenced Williams' cousin to two years probation, Williams yawned, an act that earned him six months in jail on contempt charges, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Williams' father said he was "flabbergasted" by the sentence, the maximum issued for a contempt charge without a jury trial. "It seems to me like a yawn is an involuntary action," Clifton Williams Sr. told the newspaper.

So 6 months in jail for yawning but his cousin only got probation for drugs? That makes sense.

Wow, just immagine that a family member would act like an A$$ in a court room while his cousin is facing drug charges, "who'd-A-Thunk it".

I see it all the time, complete disrespect for all law and authority. You people think its bad now just wait until this guy pops out his 6 kids with different "baby's mamma's". Then those children all have 6 kids a piece. DO THE MATH AND WAKE UP!!

There's yawning and then there's yawning. A yawn, in a certain setting and given in a certain way, can be an expression of contempt, as in "screw you, you're boring me." Taken with whatever other body language the defendant may have given, it might have been the last straw for the judge. If you've been to see a few drug court cases, especially those with accused who feel they have really little to fear because of expensive lawyers on gang retainers, you might understand how disrespectful some of the defendants can be. Of course, none of us was there, so all of this, including the story itself, is pretty much speculation.

Look at how some people dress in court but you cannot legislate good taste or good sense.....The cousin is the one who needed jail time.
