HAZMAT EMERGENCY

There is a Farm in Mardela on Hurley Neck Road with a 500 Gallon propane tank actively leaking right now. Both the Mardela and Hebron Fire Departments are on the scene but it is important to know that while this is in fact a HAZMAT CONDITION, there are NO HAZMAT EQUIPMENT on the scene.

Interestingly enough, Pittsville had a similar condition today at Rt. 353 & Old Ocean City Road with a chemical spill from a Farmer. The only difference was, Good Fella's was serving FREE Pizza and Soda to the Firefighters on the scene, so it took 8 hours to clean up a 30 minute job. Just kidding Pittsville. It is true about Good Fella's though. Hat tip to that restaurant!

UPDATE: I went to the scene but they wouldn't allow anyone access to get a closer look. Fire trucks were rolling in one after the other and even after I left the scene at 7:00 PM you can see in my last photo, another Fire Truck was on its way to the scene.

We're told Fire Trucks were the over kill once again. I couldn't see in deep enough to tell but I'll take the word of some professional Firefighters that this was in fact the case.

by the time a hazmat team got there the problem would had leaked out and dissaated.

i am curious did salisbury or any of the county hazmat teams get dispatched on this

It's an outside gas leak not a Haz Mat incident. there is no need for all the equipment on the scne and on the way. Another example of why this county needs mandatory training for officers.

Some things are true and some are not. Yes goodfellas served the crews drinks and pizza while they were waiting for the County streetsweeper to help in the collection of the absorbent from the roadway. But the entire incident took 2 hours from strart to finish . Good Job goes out to the crews from sta 7, 6, 8 and Emergency Management as well as MSP.

The spill originated from a combine that was being delivered to a local farmer after 1 year of waiting and $ 500,000.00 later, the problem was an O - ring failure causing 30 gallons of hydraulic fluid to leak all over the roadway.

What is the product? Does anyone know?

OMG. Unbelievable.

I thought Fire Companies had mandatory Hazmat training to pass their certifications. If this is false, then how can they respond to and assist the Airport in emergencies and how are they qualified to clean up gas, oil and antifreeze spills at the scene of an accident. A prime example of not needing a Hazmat trailer and truck ect. since they are not trained for Hazmat. OOPS. I forgot or had a senior moment that Salisbury is more interested in buying equipment that is not needed except for, LOOK WHAT I GOT.

Congratulations to the farmer on the new combine. Was it a Case Int'l 2388? We saw one today on Route 13.

Good Fella's has good pizza too. Great job guys. Hats off to everyone today. Nice to see that a community can still come together in an emergency. Tonight seems like a fiasco, but we will wait and see the outcome. Great pics Joe!!

A huge thank you goes out to GoodFellas for their continued support in the community of Pittsville,it was a hot day and the drinks an pizza was well enjoyed by all.

No this is another example of why this county needs control over the fire service. To much free lancing and wasting time, money and resources. There is no accountability what so ever.

Congrats to all, but I notice that while the fire department was all over this, the police department does not have the men or resources to do the same at crime scenes. This is really, really sad!

Um what happens if the propane ignited? Duh, things start burning real quick, plus a really big boom if there were still propane in the tank. Better to have equipment staged and ready than have a response time of 5 to 10 minutes. What a bunch of arm chair experts.

The moment the county takes control of the fire depts is the moment that the volunteers quit. It the county is going to tell me what to do, then the county can cut me a paycheck!

Joe, that farm has millions of dollars worth of chicken houses and more tractor trailers than any farm I know of in the county, and a professional firefighter says that it was overkill? I hope he never makes chief. In my opinion, it is better to have fire fighters standing by in case of an ignition.

Who said it was a "HE?"

No Salisbury HAZMAT truck needed. Just good people from Mardela and Hebron with common sense controlling the propane leak. Thank goodness there are still people like that in the fire service. You dont need all the crap Salisbury claims to need to stop a leak.

No, no now Shanie needs this equipment in case the fuel tank over flows and runs on her rented property. Call the chief maybe he can help. If you can find him. Did the Salisbury hazmat get a call to bring the big rig pulled by a soda truck?

Joe, I know the farm, This is a large Family with lots of family members working on the most diverse operation in the county. Chickens, Grain, Vegtables,Fish. They have millions of Dollars invested in chicken houses, Grain Storage, packing house equipment, right where those pictures were taken. There are also many other propane tanks near bye...the Volunteer Fire Fighters from Mardela, Hebron, Sharptown all know what is at this location....and I am sure they are trying to protect as much as possiable. I doubt this is over kill....You don't take a finishing hammer to drive what could be a rail road tie...

No this is not true so quit talking out of your a$$. Most of the counties in this state have county run fire departments with plenty of volunteers. They don't need a pay check cut and they are not complaining.

In case you didn't know it the county is already paying the volunteers millions of dollars.

By the way it was Athol Road not Hurleys Neck Joe.

Is it that hard to turn off a valve?
what a bunch of idiots.

Pete Richardson I know you are friends with Gordo so quit speaking about the fire service in which you know nothing about. Your drivel will never be able to truly defend Bill Gordy's wasteful spending of tax dollars now go back to hustling your farm equipment at the auctions.

Joe, something is up. Station 74 had a HAZMAT monday. Station 8 had one yesterday. Now station 5. Something is not right with this.

Anonymous said...

Did Parsonsburg bring their Special Operations trailer to this call? If not, why?

It is my understanding that they have the equipment and materials in the trailer for this type of incident.

Anonymous said...

You can have all the equiptment and materials in the world. But when you dont have the Correct manpower and training I mean TRAINING then it realy dose nobody any good.

Anonymous said...

Any one that has any training in Hazmat can tell you that anything given enough volume can be considered a hazmat incident. Granted that some of the firefighters at that scene in Mardela were not trained in these types of conditions. I can tell you that the amounts of fire trucks that you saw JOE were there for a purpose. Why dont you read some literature on how to deal with a propane leak before you go running your mouth about things you dont understand.

YES the fire departments in this county need to be run by the county. Not by the fire chiefs. The volunteer system would still be in place. It would be better organized.

i am a volunteer firefighter and EMT so those who want to question my knowledge BITE ME!

They are really a haz mat call. A fuel spill is a hazardous condition, but not a true haz mat call. The volunteer chiefs association changed the procedures to call a simple petroleum spill to a "haz mat." This was done a short while back so the people listening could say Salisbury is on a Haz Mat call and they have a reason for a new Haz Mat truck. Gordo, See and Hoppes new what they were getting into. Check into it if you don't believe me. If someone overfills their gas tank slightly it it is dispatched as a haz mat even if it is just one gallon of gas. Smart thinking on their part, lol.

Some day some of these but H@#s will need these firefighters and ems people for themselves or there familys, and they won`t care if the bring a hundred pieces of equipment.

Anonymous said...

why did the salisbury firman / mardela vollie running the show wait until he was out of water to call for more resources? did he not want to allow others to play in his sand box?

Anonymous said...

there will be a class at Head Qtrs. on valve opening and closing the dress will be casual or uniform of the day. It will be three days long. Sorry Parsonburg Hebron and SFD will be attending. Must be fair to all.

Let's talk about the gas leak with an explosion in forestville where all the equipment was in fact needed.
