While 40+ Protesters lined the streets of Princess Anne just moments ago, Officials were listening. In a bold move yesterday, Princess Anne raised taxes 12% and Somerset County was set to vote today for a 7% increase.
However, this Protest clearly made a difference as their assessment rate was $ .92 cents per hundred, they were proposing to raise it to $ .99 cents per hundred.
By the time the vote was said and done, Somerset County actually LOWERED their rate from $ .92 cents down to $ .90 cents per hundred.
ARE YOU LISTENING ALL OTHER MUNICIPALITIES/COUNTIES????? This is what it takes to SPARK an economy! If you want to turn things around fast, LOWER your tax rates and give some relief.
Unfortunately for the Town of Princess Anne Residents, they'll fell the pain of a very serious increase and probably lose quite a few residents.
Salisbury News wants to thank and congratulate ALL of those people who took the time to get out, hold signs and clearly send a message to these County Officials. GRASS ROOTS FOLKS!

Hi Joe. You should ask your buddy Frank White why they're raising my taxes in Princess Anne. Maybe he'll give you a straight answer.
I can tell you one reason why without having to ask Frank. Jay Parker and others screwed the Taxpayers out of $90,000.00. Or don't you read our articles?
It takes people getting involved like this to get government to listen, afterall we get the government we deserve. No one else is going to do it for us. Good for them!
I wish the city of Fruitland would actually listen to their tax payers instead of sneaking through increases on our water/trash bill and making it go up in times of bad economic times. No wonder houses around fruitland are going to foreclosures, people cant afford to play high taxes and water bills, especially when u have to pay county and city taxes.
I've never seen anything like that in Somerset. I was driving by and I was amazed. Finally people are standing up here!

Come meet me at the Fruitland City Council Meeting tonight and tell them NO to increased fees on water and sewer! Balance your budget Fruitland and stop spending for a change. I have my signs with me if I need them!
Julie: Sorry, I have to work. I will be at the 16th meeting. We need more people to run, change the times of these meeting from the day to all night meetings. i also do not think most understand how sewer and water can really hurt, especiallly businesses. it can kill growth!
Fruitland's meeting is at 7pm tonight actually. 7:45 is the Public Hearing on the Constant Yield Tax Rate for FY 09-10,

I have heard from one of the city council members that it doesnt matter how many people picket outside or even sign petitions i have seen going around, it is a done deal and has been struck. They snuck this one by the tax payers.
6:13, protest anyway. Thanks to Campbell and Cohen, one year we got the merry three to rescind the hike. Maybe only a little relief and temporary, but it was the principle of the thing.

The differance between protest and militias are guns. I prefer protest, power of the pen til the last moment possible. After that you have to do what you have to do.

In the case of Fruitland, there wasn't proper notification. So enough people were not able to participate, to make the news, for example. Many many residence said we can not afford your spending but the council told us, they would do it anyway.
The protest in Somerset County yesterday restoreed some of my faith in my fellow citizens. To take off from work, or other activities and demonstrate in the middle of the afternoon (local gov'ts should schedule meetings in the late afternoon or early evenings to accomodate people) is truly a tremendous sacrifice!
THANK ALL OF YOU!!! It did make a difference and will make a difference in the future. Hopefully, this is a sign of a reawakening of the people not only in the case of Somerset County, but will spread like a wild grass fire throughout our local communities and across our great Nation!
