Looks like they're already trying to learn Bubba Math!
There were 2053 votes cast. But only 1394 cards cast. If everyone had voted for 2, there would have been a total of 2788 votes cast.
That means 659 people voted for two and 735 voted for just one.
My bet is most of the Comegys people voted only for him, that they made up the biggest group in that voted-only-for-one number. A small percentage may have voted for Caldwell as a #2 figuring he'd be easier to beat than Ireton. Or maybe even a few thinking they had to vote for 2 gave #2 to Della Penna so Ireton and Caldwell wouldn't have bigger votes.
Caldwell likely did get a healthy number of second choice votes from Ireton supporters. (He just wasn't "out there" until the end.) And some of Caldwell's harder core Republican supporters likely voted Caldwell only since both Ireton and Comegys are Democrats. The precinct numbers will give a better picture.
One thing missing from the picture is how many cards were cast in District 1. But since someone reported there were about 100 votes around 4:00 or 5:00, with 205 votes cast, it looks like a larger percentage voted for 2 in their district race. Again, the precinct numbers will give a better picture...
The absentees could make a difference on the mayor's race. Usually absentees follow the same proportions as the polls. But that wasn't the case in 2007 when Spies and Cohen tied in absentees with both beating Comegys in that count. Depending on what area the absentees came from, this could turn out to be an Ireton-Caldwell face-off with Comegys looking all hounddoggy on the council for the next two years.
Either way, the spread Ireton got over Comegys ought to make Comegys pretty hounddoggy today anyway.

Did you see Bubba's interviews on t.v. Someone must have told him to take that wad out of his mouth, speak clearly, smile and try to project some energy into his voice. Once again, he steals from Ireton. Bubba's smile was creepy because it was so unnatural. We're not falling for it Bubba! You're no Jim Ireton and you can't pretend to be.

That was my plan, that is why I voted for Ireton and Caldwell regardless of the party affiliation.
As big as his victory is, Ireton missed a golden opportunity to wrap it up yesterday -- not enough of his supporters cast their 2nd vote for Bob Caldwell.

Look for the Chamber of Commerce and Greater Salisbury Committee to make you their whipping boy for the next month. The landlords and SAPOA have shown their ineptitude in getting Comegys elected as mayor to replace Barrie with a reasonable facsimile thereof.
You won't see Barrie and her lawyer pal Baloney waving Comegys signs at the polls on April 7.
Beware Brad Bellaciccio and the business/professional elite!

That's pretty insulting to Caldwell anyway, to say Ireton would have it "wrapped up" if Ireton had gotten more to vote Caldwell as number 2. Ireton's supporters aren't puppets on a string.
You assume a lot thinking that Caldwell is the easier one to beat in a general. And if Caldwell needed that much help, well...

% of registered voters vs total of city population that are eligible to vote
% of registered voters that actually went to the polls
breakdown the turnouts from districts by % total votes per district vs district eligible voters

Drive for success:
1. There are about 14,000 + registered voters.
2. Population of Salisbury runs between 26,000 and 28,000 depending which census you use. Of course, some of these are under 18, but I don't have census in front of me to say how many.
3. 1394 voters went to polls. Times said it was 11%. I get about 10%. But maybe there are some purges from the list now.
4. The Board of Elections didn't say how many cards (that means # of voters) were cast in District 1, just how many total were cast.
% turnout sucks. Still more voters came out than last time when it was Barrie vs. non-viable contenders (and she still got only 60% in the general...40% were willing to vote for "anybody but Barrie"). But there are more registered voters now, so that hurts the %.
After the absentees are counted, maybe we'll hear results by candidate by polling place or by precinct or some kind of detail like that.
