Below is the agenda for the 2009 Camden Neighborhood Association Mayoral Primary Forum. We anticipate that we will have an excellent showing and an event that will give attendees a good look at the positions of the mayoral candidates on a wide range of topics. If you have a question or questions to pose, please email it or them to me not later than noon on the 26th. Questions will be elicited during the event's first half via 3x5 cards available to attendees, but the first half of the event will feature questions emailed in ahead of time. Please make the question short and to the point, containing, if necessary, historical references to the issue.
We anticipate that we will have time for about twelve questions in all. We'll stick with the agenda as best we can.

For Mr. Ireton:
Since you have so much money in your war chest, how about doing some TV and radio spots before the primary to tell voters whether, if elected, you would be both a full time teacher and a full time mayor -- or would one be a part-time endeavor, and if so which one?
Inquiring minds want to know!
Could someone explain or ask; Why do business owners who pay taxes in the city are not allowed to vote, but renters who live in the city (and many part time) are able to vote.
Camden does really good forums, informative and well-run. I don't live there, but have attended a couple in the past.
The church you're talking about is Bethany Lutheran Church on the S.E. corner where South Blvd. meets Camden Ave. There's a driveway to the parking lot on Camden and a door closest to Camden on the parking lot side that goes to a "fellowship hall."
That's what I remember from a couple of years ago, so don't shoot me if they've changed it up since then. Anyone know if it's going to be televised?
Anon 3:23, there is no way this is going to be a part-time endeavor for Ireton and you know it. He will likely put in way more than 40 hours a week on this job just cleaning up the messes of the current administration. You sure won't find his vehicle hiding out in the cemetery and home taking a nap like Comegys. Why don't you ask about the real issues, or would that reveal too many negatives for Comegys?

What's all this hoopla about Ireton and the full-time mayor thing? I think he answered it in his Daily Times quote. He said he felt it was at least a 40-hour job. Seems to me he wouldn't mention that if he weren't planning to do it.
I wonder about the motivation about those pounding this topic. Ever think that Ireton is trying to give his employer some latitude? My bet is, he's already had some discussion with them and this is where they agreed to leave it until after the primary. When I still had kids in school, teachers leaving or changing positions were handled very carefully. I wouldn't imagine things have changed that much since then.

It's a very important question -- a teacher's schedule is loaded during the school year, although pretty open for about 2.5 months in the summer and about 10 days at Christmas.
If you think he really responded to the question then words don't have the same meaning to you as they do in the dictionary. He has now ducked the question a couple times by saying that he can't answer it until after the primary because he isn't going to talk to the Board of Ed. unless he runs at least second next week -- and we can vote for two candidates then.
Then, if he continues on, will it become "after the general election".
Voters are entitled to know -- and he should have worked it out before now.
Imagine the reaction if Gary Comegys said that he might retire from his state job but hasn't decided yet and will tell us after the votes are in!

Here we go again with the bogus "full time" question. Folks, the reason these people keep bringing it up is that this is all they have: they don't really want you to ask Jim the question, because they know he has a good, reasonable, intelligent answer. They just want to try to find something, anything, that makes Comegys a better candidate. And for the person who said Jim should use his "massive" war chest to buy tv commercials: you apparently have no idea how much a tv commercial costs. His money has gone almost entirely into printing mailings with his positions and signs. He chose to pay more money and use local companies, by the way, when he could have gone the cheap route and bought online. If you have legit questions, ask the guy! But we all know that you don't really, truly want to know the answer. You are not fooling anyone.

yeah, because the mayor is the right person to stop a riot. Here's a wacky idea: call the friggin' police! When Ireton is mayor, there will be more them, and they will be better paid. Or, you can vote for Comegys, who you will run to wake up in the cemetery, he will waddle down to the riot (because the police professionals obviously cannot be asked to do something about it), see something scary, and turn and run away! The choice is clear: vote the Comegys/Insley ticket!
In the 2.5 months he has off, he will will do more positive for this city than has been done in the last 8 years...so what is your worry.
They can't ask the question themselves, because they are sitting next to him at the table.

Barrie Tilghman made this job a full time job with all of her wrong doings. Did any of you ask her that same question about working full time? NO, you didn't because you are her lackeys. Get a grip. Ireton will be there if he's elected. Caldwell will be there if he is elected. Bubba, you'll have to go and find him or send Chief Webster to put out a BOLO on him.

Jim has answered the question. You refuse to hear the answer. That's fine: don't vote for him. But to keep pretending he didn't answer it only makes you guys look like morons. Other than taking ideas from Jim's website and pretending that they are his own, you have offered nothing good about your guy. What we're seeing now is nothing compared to what the Comegys supporters will try to do before this election is over. Jim is a good candidate and they will do anything to try to shed doubt. They can't beat him on the issues so they will play a little game of whispering circles and spreading half-truths. Remember what they did to Tim Spies, otherwise Gary wouldn't have won his council seat for a second term. I think that Salisbury voters remember the lessons from Louise and Gary and are too smart to be fooled by those who work to discredit Ireton. Campbell will be next. The last thing that SMith and Comegys want is Cmapbell to retain her council seat. I say lets turn out in droves and show them that we are here to take our city back and make it a place where we all proud of.
Where you are regisetered to vote is based on where you LIVE, not where you work or own property or a business.
Why in the world would you want the business owners or employees who live outside the city voting in the election?
Elected officials are there to represent their taxpaying CITIZEN/RESIDENTS, not the businesses.
When you get into representing the businesses over your citizen/residents, it is usually called special interest.

There's more than one option, which is why he and his employer are waiting to see whether they have to cross the bridge depending on the primary.
Your concern over this should be aimed at Gary Comegys, who right now is not putting in full-time hours at his full-time job. But let's say he has lots of paid time off he's using.
Do you know how much paid time off Mr. Ireton has?
How about Bob Caldwell. If the real estate market heats up, what's he going to tell his clients that might earn him a $10,000 commission when he gets "that call" for the third time?
Your "legitimate question" becomes illegitimate when targeting just one candidate with it. Why is Ireton's answer any more of Barriespeak than Caldwell's, for example? (Disclaimer: I have nothing against Caldwell. He's a good man. )
As for a retired Bubba, I'll take a part-time Ireton over a full-time Bubba any day.

My guess is, you're the same person as 3:23 p.m. and you are pi**ed that so many contributors have faith in Ireton and his answer.

business owners should be allowed to vote. They as well have an investment in this city. In no way does their numbers outweigh the city residents. I didn't say anything regarding employees, Common sense tells you they should
not be allowed to vote. I would like to know the history behind this, I would bet this has just changed in the last 20 or 30 years.
If people want to concern themselves with time spent on a job, they should worry about how Gary "works" at a full-time job. Saying he puts in part-time hours at his state job would be generous. A person doesn't change his work ethic just because of an election. Hasn't he proven that time after time after time?
I have a question for the persons (or maybe just person) digging on this question about Jim Ireton like a sore toenail:
Regardless of how Ireton answers your question, if it's Ireton and Comegys who get through the primary, which one are you voting for?

The way Gary loafed on his state job he could have also been a full time councilman. He chose not to.
Jim can manage both, yeah it's like working two jobs but there are a lot of people working two jobs now days!
If people could survive on one income there would be a lot more jobs. Just about everyone I know is working two or three jobs these days.
