Tim Chaney Announces His Candidacy For District 1 Council Seat

Tim Chaney, 51, a resident of Franklin Avenue and frequent attendee at Salisbury City Council meetings, filed this morning as a candidate for the District 1 council seat. District 1 includes parts of West Salisbury, Chaney’s area, and a stretch from Downtown through northern Camden.

Chaney, who helped start the Presidents Neighborhood Association and currently serves as its treasurer, said crime reduction, improving struggling neighborhoods, addressing housing problems and better spending priorities are his core issues for this campaign.

“Most of all, District 1 needs to be heard and to have a voice that speaks for everyday people,” Chaney said.

“In a way, I’ve been speaking up for District 1 people for a long time at council meetings,” added Chaney, who works as a kitchen supervisor and chef at an assisted living residence. The native of Baltimore moved to Salisbury as a youth in 1969 and graduated from Wicomico Senior High School in 1976.

Chaney feels too much emphasis has been placed on new developments, lofty projects and special interests while neighborhoods like his and others in District 1 suffer.

“I’m just a resident who knows what it means to work for a living, struggle against hard times, and want something better for our children,” Chaney stated. “I don’t have children myself, but I worry about them. They’re our future,” he said.

His campaign treasurer is Shirley M. Dashiell, a lifelong Wicomico County resident and well-known Westside volunteer.

District 1’s low voter turnout and lack of citizen participation with government also concern Chaney, who said that he hopes his candidacy will encourage more people to get involved. He said that, in just the short time his neighborhood association has existed, people working together have made some small changes for the better.

“Our district has people of many colors and backgrounds. I think that’s a strength,” Chaney said.

UPDATE: Joe I saw a few questions about donations. I should have my PO box address tomorrow and checks should be written out to "Tim Chaney for District One." Thanks to everyone, I look forward to meeting as many people as possible. Let's work together for open government. Thanks again.......Tim Chaney

Does Chaney have a website? How do we donate to his campaign? Thanks.

Go Tim!

Tim will actually read the information before coming to a council meeting. He will ask intelligent questions. He will not automatically vote with any group so he can get back to eating. He is quality.

Hi, Joe. I know Tim Chaney works during the day. I'm off today. I'll call around and see if I can find someone who knows if he has a website and how to do donations.

I'll post it anything I find out here. Either my stupid email account is all messed up or Outlook is, but I can't send stuff right now.

Wonderful news for District 1 voters that Chaney has stepped up.

Shanie has done nothing at all for her constituents--and they know it!

She contributes nothing to any decision and simply looks to see what Barrie wants and votes accordingly--she has not the intelligence to dissect issues nor the will to stand on her own.

Shanie, it's time for you to move on.

Tim Cheney could not have chosen a better person for treasurer. Shirley Dashiell is top notch. I worked with her for many years at Verizon and know her well. What a great team. Good luck Tim I know you will be working for the people and not the developers

Has Shanie filed her paperwork to run for re-election?

GOOD CHOICE!

If Tim Chaney knocks Shanie Shields off the tracks there will be some light at the end of the tunnel.

Best of luck Tim!!!

Looks like the first part of 2009 won't be too bad. Although I am an Eagles fan..hope that the Eagles OR Ravens make it to the Superbowl, Salisbarrie will finally become Salisbury again, Joe's lawsuit has been posponed
( hopefully dropped ) and we have good people to make a choice from!

The City of Salisbury, the people of Salisbury are truly fortunate, after all the ugly nasty and mean spirited government that Barry Tilghman has promoted for so many years, we have great candidates apprearing. What a good omen. Tim Chaney running and Bob Caldwell, and Debbie Campbell and Jim Ireton. Whew, talk about a real good bunch. Congrats to all of you, and I sure hope that the people of Salisbury realize what good people they have before them, and they contribute, volunteer, and most of all vote.

6:27 I think right now the Eagles are playing the best football collectively. It scares me to think about an Eagles-Ravens Superbowl.

Stover and Ackers, two good defenses, it could be a 3-0 or 6-3 score. GOOOO Eagles
