Breaking News! Jason Chance Resigns From Sheriff's Department
Sherif's Deputy Jason Chance, once recognized as an outstanding Sheriff's Deputy, turned in his resignation today to go into effect December 16th 2008.
Back on July 3, 2008 we exposed this story where Mr. Chance had been found drinking and driving that included an alleged hit and run.
Today, Mr. Chance had his day in court where the DWI case was nol pros, (sp?). He received a PBJ for leaving the scene. He was then found guilty of negligent driving and will serve 30 hours of community service. He also received 1 year supervised probation plus court costs and fines.
I have been told by a source his resignation came after very strong encouragement by Sheriff Mike Lewis.

He received a peanut butter and jelly for leaving the scene???
FYI, according to WBOC, the resignation was effective as of today.
That is why we voted Sheriff Lewis to be our sheriff. He is going to make the right call every time. Mike Lewis is a law man no matter who you are or what you do. Mike Lewis is in a class by himself. Keep up the great work Sheriff...
WBOC is wrong. It was turned in today and goes into effect the 16th. I can understand how they got that wrong but it is wrong.
I wonder if he urged Davis to resign?????
Let me answer that question for you JR, anonymous 6:14.
Sheriff Lewis did in fact ask Davis Ruark to resign. I don't know what rock you were under the whole time that was going on and Sheriff Lewis never shied, (sp?) away from how he felt about that situation.
Now stop being such an axxhole and go home and hug a bunny.
Amazing!! A slap on the wrist for someone who is supposed to enforce the law.
I cannot recall ever reading anywhere that Sheriff Lewis asked Ruark to resign. I must have been under a rock at the time also.
OMG that's it? He could have killed someone.
And watch tomorrow's edition of the Daily Slime to have it in large print like it is the crime of century. Good luck Jason. You are human like the rest of us and you made a mistake. Screw those who throw stones from their glass houses. Many of them work at the Times.
There were other drunk drivers in court today and I don't see them being harrassed. There was a young lady there who had her 2nd drunk driving case. She didn't lose her job or is she being put thru the wringer. Yes he made a mistake but who the hell has not.
anonymous 6:34, you were under a rock as well then.
anonymous 6:37, I couldn't agree more. They went after Ruark for months as well as Frank White for months.
I'm kind of blown away I haven't heard of any follow up story about the nasty Blogger being sued by Mayor Tilghman, since the court date has been confirmed.
Everyone does make mistakes and Jason will lose his job over this one, a job I know he loved. Life doesn't end though. He is a very smart man with a Masters Degree. He will do what is right and my hat is tipped to him for resigning and doing what is right.
Hell go get a job with the city cops now.
He'll have to take a job with a local dept for a couple of years. Then he'll easily get on with MSP or DSP.
Good Luck Jason! I don't know you, but know that it is not the end of the world. Sometimes we have to hit the wall to turn our selves around. This time next year, or sooner even, this will all be behind you, and hopefully you will be a better person for it all. Really, man--best of luck.
From someone who had to hit the wall to turn her life around.
Nalagirl.
Damn shame. Jason is a stand up guy who made a mistake. If he lost his job, so should have Davis Ruark.
In life, we all deserve a mulligan.
Joe:
I assume that none of these charges are a felony, just misdemeanors?
If so, Jason could be hired in another law enforcement agency. Damn shame that we would lose him in the WCSO.
You are right, we all make mistakes and he has accepted his fate. Let's hope that he lands on his feet. He was an asset to our school system and would make a great teacher.
Before others trash that hope, please know that there are teachers out there that have had numerous DUIs and even have to blow into a tube to start their car.
Best wishes Jason!
This cop is not a terrible person at all, he made a mistake and a costly one, however I would like to point out that Mr. Albero would be on the other side of the fence screaming to lock his ass up if it were hmmmmm someone like the Mayor. He plays two sides of the fence depending who you are.
Joe you probably won't post this, but, this is pure BS. He is no better person than any other first offender! He should get the very same and nothing less. Its no wonder police officers and other officials don't get the respect they (want) deserve.
Jeremy O.
WOW
That really sucks that he was forced to resign.
Nol Prosc roughly translated from Latin means "Not Prosecuted" or the charges were dropped.
Why would he have to resign?
Oh well there is always room for one more in Pocomoke, where drinking on the job is not a crime.
While I regret that Jason is no longer working for the WCSO, I think everyone is forgetting a few main points here. 1) He resigned. He was not fired. Lewis urged him to resign, just like others urged Ruark to resign. 2) The DUI was not the main issue here. The big issue is that he was involved in a hit and run accident and left the scene. That shows that he was trying to hide from what he did. If he had only gotten a DUI, I could understand him staying on the job, like Ruark did. However, he was in an accident and directly came into contact with another persons life. And for that, he should resign. He is a police officer and he is suppose to set an example for all. By doing that, he was showing complete disregard for what he is suppose to stand for. Instead of stepping up and taking responsibility for what happened that night, he tried to hide.
I actually give him a lot of credit for resigning.
Some would have stayed no matter what because they think because they are cops they can do what they want and they are above the laws we others abide by.
I'm sorry this happened to him, but at the same time, a cop should have known better.
He showed bad judgement with his illegal actions, but I believe he learned a hard lesson and is now showing good judgement.
If only Davis Ruark would have done the same, which he should have.
Good luck Jason with your future. You can overcome this.
Jason Chance did something all cops have done and paid the ultimate price. There are alot of police officers in Wicomico County and the Eastern Shore who wish they could do the job as well as Jason. And yes, he will get hired by another agency and both he and the agency will benefit.
Well:
1. Everyone screws up, even Mike Lewis. And most everyone that drinks, drinks and drives, thats no secret, so stop acting like you are better than everyone else bc you claim you dont. Yes, they could hurt someone, but so could your dumba$$ talking on a cell phone.
2. They wouldnt make bars with parking lots if they didnt want you to drive your car there. And magically most the cars are gone at 2 when they close?????? Think about that one for a sec.
3. Cops love DUI's. After all thats what pays for their salary, by screwing everyone else over. I think he should be kept as an officer. After all not everyone can be perfect like all you critics.
What a loss to the WCSO. Jason Chance has done more in his 7 years with the agency than most have done in their entire careers there. Davis Ruark can drive a county car 'DUI' from Salisbury to Ocean City carrying a concealed firearm and remain in office...Davis now carries 12 points on his license, still drives a county vehicle. Let's see how much is that costing the tax payers for insurance? Yet, Jason is forced to resign, somehow this isn't fair.
Oh 8:36 - Jason didn't try to hide anything. He and his wife are the ones that returned to the scene and reported the accident. If he was trying to hide he would have parked his vehicle in his garage to hide it then driven it to another state to have it repaired...just as some members of WCSO have done in the past.
Jason will be missed at WCSO. Our school system will never have the knowledge or experience Jason had to run the SRO program.
Hang in there Jason, I'm behind you and many more are with me on this. Give our best to your family.
603 that "law" man tried to cover for the States Attorney when got into that trouble down in OC. I don't give a shit what anyone says. every agency has a Good Ole' Boy network it is only a matter if you are in or your not.
I would not say that he got a peanut butter and jelly dumbass. This man lost his career. Chance will pay more dearly because he is a cop. the avearage person gets the slap on the wrist. The migrant drunk, the postman, the beer truck driver, the judges daughter. The school teacher that blows to start his car. It all seems small when we look at the whole system that fails us daily. Jason could have taken the high road and stayed at the scene and waited. That is not what drunks do most of the time. He could have cried my time at the DRILL Academy made me a drunk therfore i deserve special treatment. No this man did the right thing and fell on sword. As for you mental midgets the 1 year supervised probation will prevent him from wear and carry a firearm hence no police job for now. I hope in the year he has to think he will see the true hypocracy of law enforcement or the fact that it is the most thankless job on earth. To all those big wigs and you know who you are that go to the Turtle, Market Street, and all the other watering holes take note. There is no room for this if you wear a badge have a designated driver. I recall long ago i was driving home and was totally exhausted. I got stopped by a trooper in a neighboring state. As he looked in my vehicle he observed a badge in my wallet and he stated are you going to pull over and rest. I to this day think he believed I had been drinking. I was happy he stopped me I was dangerous. I pulled into a parking lot and slept for a while and continued on. I know if I had been anyone other than who I am i would have been tested or at least a closer look. It is not fair, but it is life. I have watched rich men walk free and poor get hard time. This society we live in needs to take a close look at what we have become and do a lot of soul searching. I wish jason all the luck but he broke the law and he has paid. I hope all the young people out there he mentored to learn this hard lesson and never get behind the wheel intoxicated. Joe hats off to you for being fair and honest. I think even you have seen the unbalanced scale of justice in the last year or so. Keep on Blogging and spreading the news other are affraid to report. This country needs every ave of media it can get.
Jason go apply at the U.S. Marshalls office, they'll soon have an opening as soon as Joe Abbott goes to court.
That's one dude that should lose his job and be jailed. He likes to put his Marshalls uniform on and flash his badge in peoples faces all the time trying to intimidate them. He's a major loser, he should have kept his job at WCDC.
Best of luck to you Jason, I wish you well.
I think Jason is a good person but to say he was a good police officer is something else. Was he a good security guard, counselor, gopher for the school administrators yes. This is not what I would call a good police officer. What work did he do to protect the citizens, by making criminal arrests, handling calls for service solving crimes. I would also like to add that someone with his few years on would not normally have obtained the rank of Sergeant, however he was promoted very quickly under Nelms, just like most. Nelms promoted who he liked not those who were deserving, hell they did not even have promotional testing. I'm sure with his education, and knowledge that he will suceed in the civilian world but he can never testify again, becuase he has committed a crime of mistrust and thus any testimony can and will be impeached.
That this is a good man or not isn't at question here. What we are seeing is our biased court system showing partiality. What we are seeing is a corrupt DA's office faining improper case handling for a lawman. What we are seeing here is a pitiful excuse for a judicial system. And, they wonder why their public image is so pathetic and abject.

Funny you should mention Joe Abbott. Looks like he got off too. Plea

I can tell you I respect what this officer has done. He took responsibility for his actions like a man. I commend this officer unlike most who do everything they can to cover their own ass along with the superiors.
Jason,
You can lay your head down at night and know you are a REAL police officer. I hope you go back to your proffession in the future. You are human, make mistakes like the rest of us, and unlike alot of your co-workers...you manned up and faced your fate. Mike Lewis has lost a good police officer. It is a shame and it is his loss. He would much rather keep the deceitful ones. Good Luck to you and your family, and remember, you have not disgraced yourself in any way. If anything we respect you much more than the ones riding around profiling. They have much more in there closet than you do sir.
6:50 why do you like so many others have trouble sticking to the post itself. noone said that jason was a bad person or that this isnt a loss for many people. the post is simply letting the readers know he has resigned. you like many others take a simple statement and run with it. how do you know wcso isnt saddened by the resignation of jason and has anyone said that there arent other problems in the dept. name an agency with a fair number of employees that doesnt have its issues, unfortunately thats life. it saddens me that people like you and many others sit behind these computers and just punch in words because noone sees you or will know who you are and cast stones at people. dont assume you always know the details of a situation when the truth is you really dont and only those directly involved know the details of the matter. jason will find other work and hopefully prosper wherever he goes but may he also learn and be an example of others that there are consequences for negative behavior.
6:19 i must have been under that rock too. Must have been a big rock. I didn't recall Mike Lewis the Sheriff asking Davis Ruark to resign. Can you research that statement? I think your wrong. Is it true that Mike Lewis went to pick Davis Ruark up after his arrest?
You can THINK I'm wrong all you want, you're wrong! Sheriff Lewis has felt that way from the instant he found out.
I am NOT nor would I EVER speak for Sheriff Mike Lewis. He has PUBLICLY made this statement from the very beginning and if you weren't listening, you were doing so because you didn't want to hear it or believe it.
The fact remains, that is how Sheriff Lewis felt and still feels today. The decision and choice was up to Davis Ruark and he chose not to resign. NOW, does that make Davis Ruark a bad guy? Absolutely Not! Davis tok more punishment as a FIRST TIME OFFENDER than any one he has tried in similar cases. Another FACT none of you want to listen to or believe. He took his punishment like a man and moved on with his life.
I think it's a shame, especially after the example Davis Ruark set by staying on the job. It's more than a shame, it's a joke. What's good for the County's Top Law Enforcement Position should be good for all.
6:49 They only go after Davis, Frank, and other public figures because you go after everyone but them. Make Sense to ya Mr. Blogger?
That's interesting Mr. Anonymous Cop 8:27,
Seems to me I broke the story about Davis Ruark AND Fraank White. Just because YOU weren't alowed to beat the shit out of them anonymously, that obviously still pisses you off. Be a man and say whatever you like but hide behind anonymous with a badge and a gun, I have no respect for someone like you.
PBJ means Probation Before Judgement. The Guilty finding is stricken from his record and will remain so if he completes the terms and conditions of his probation.
8:22 I do recall Sheriff Lewis saying that if any one of his deputies were caught drinking and driving they would be dismissed, so why then did he just URGE Jason to resign? Huh? LOL Answer that one??
There are obvious legal issues/matters in such a case. An Employer cannot terminate an employee if he/she is not found guilty.
Get real Joe! You broke the story because you knew the story would be on WBOC, not because you wanted to. You would have covered for your friends too if you knew it wouldn't have been on the news wouldn't you?
anonymous 8:38,
Let me explain a little something to you. There has NEVER been an account where I didn't break a story, NEVER!
Sheriff Lewis, Davis Ruark, Frank White, Debbie Campbell, Rick Pollitt and the entire County Council know it is my job to do so and that is what I do.
I'd now like you to give anyone here an example of a story I covered up? I am NOT te Daily Times. You also keep bringing up WBOC. Let me asure you, WBOC takes a multitude of stories from right here on this Blog, as does WMDT and the Daily Times.
Salisbury News has become respected because we do tell the truth, LIKE IT OR NOT! Once the story is out there, that is when the MSM can go nuts with it and that is also why Barrie Tilghman has tried to CRUSH me and Salisbury News because she had this wonderful thing of intimidation in the past where she walked all over everyone in the MSM. Now they can use the excuse, well, it was already out there on the Blogs. Do you get it now? Why do you think the MSM loves Salisbury News!
Nevertheless, I challenge you to come up with ONE story I covered up. You can't because it never happened. All of the above people respect what I do, therefore I am just as respectful in return when I do break a story. Oh, then I don't beat them up for 3 months like te Daily Times likes to do regularly. And they wonder how I can break most news stories first. Dee, Dee, Deeee!
Forget this Jason Chance stuff...somebody find out who Barrie ran into and did not report the incident to the police...
This blog is like the sport of FISHING! Cops do it regularly. They catch one and keep it, they catch another and throw it back.
It's that simple. End of story. That is REALITY!
8:49 you are not required to report an incident to the police. I hit a car and left my phone number on it. Also, if you do call the police they tell you to exchange insurance. You must be a friend af Joe's. Ask any law enforcement officer. You must have an issue with the Mayor as well.
8:46 your job? do you get paid for this? are you paid by the counsel? the sheriff's dept.? Davis Ruark? Frank White? or do you get a kick out of trying to intimidate people?
Or do you just feel important exposing others? do you live in a glass house? i doudt it!
anonymous 9:32,
Since when is being a volunteer not a job? I put more hours in here per day than any single person out there reading this Blog.
Do I get paid for doing this? Oh, you better believe I get paid. I just don't get paid with money but you wouldn't and couldn't understand the rewards I get from this for so many others beaten up, run through the mud and driven out of Town.
Do I get a kick out of intimidating people? Is that what I do? Do I intimidate YOU? Ohhhhh, I see, that's what's going on here. Did I hurted your itty bitty feewings?
Do I feel important exposing others. Wel, yeah, I actually do. You see Barrie, for many years now no one has been able to touch you. Life's a biotch, isn't it?
Do I live in a glass house? Well, let's see, there's plenty of glass in my home and not one piece is broken. Would you like to come by and try to break a piece of my glass in my home?
Joe, maybe you don't "cover up", but you certainly engage in selective reporting. Since we are on the topic of law enforcement, how come you never reported on the SPD officer who received an award from the governor recently? I read the article in the Daily Times and was surprised that you didn't cover the story. Then I realized, it's and SPD officer. If that had been a sheriff's deputy, you'd have thrown a parade for him. You'd have plastered pictures of him with Mike Lewis and Fernando Guerrero all over town. Funny thing is, that same officer won the Knights of Columbus Officer of the Year award last year for the entire State of Maryland. You covered it when he was acknowledged locally, along with a sheriff's deputy, but not when he won for the state. Not a thing on your site about that. You constantly bash SPD because of your issues with the mayor and chief, and you inflate the work of the sheriff's office to assist in proving your point. I just think it's a little inaccurate to claim complete impartiality and fair coverage. Your SPD articles are almost always abrasive and with a tone of attack, while your WCSO articles tend to praise and have soft edges. It's fine to have opinions of individual people, but don't let that reflect in your writing about agencies as a whole. There are a lot of fine, hard-working people at SPD and the City in general. I would suggest using a guided missle rather than a nuclear bomb to make your points. BTW, keep up the good work w/ the Red Kettle Campaign. The Salvation Army is an outstanding organization that does a lot of good for this community. I admire your dedication to such a worthy cause.
Okay your house is glass? Lets do search on you and all of your family! Give us all of the manes and we will get back with you.
Dear Anonymous 9:46,
WOW, isn't that an interesting comment. First of all, I make no excuses and please forgive me as I had no clue of such an outstanding Award.
You have me confused with someone else, let me assure you of that. I have all the respect in the world for the Salisbury Police Officers. It's very evident I have issues with SOME of those on the third floor.
More importantly Folks, don't YOU find it interesting how this anonymous individual had the GRAND opportunity to mention this rewarded Officer right here and now and he refused to do so? Oh, I know, now you'll come back and do so but the fact remains, I do not get the Daily Times. Nor do I get any Press Releases from the Salisbury Police Department.
Perhaps you should ask his CO WORKERS why they haven't posted this information on their own Website? You see Mr. anonymous, you're picking on the wrong guy here.
Nevertheless, please send me that information and I' proudly put it up for al to see.
anonymous 9:51,
That's nothing new. Public information is public information. You have drug my entire family through the mud, al anonymous pussies and not one man big enough to do so with their real name. As a matter of fact, many of you go after my Wife and are such pussies you pick on our Grandson as well.
Yeah, I'd like to meet some of you pussies who get a thrill out of picking on my Wife and Grandson. I'd be the first to say, I'd beat the living shit out of you if you were only man enough to use your real name. Some tough guy you are. As for the public information, it's a free country and if you think exposing such information hasn't already been done, go for it. We've been beat up by the Tilghman Administration hundreds of times before. You come off as no king of hero. You'll not come up with anything new on us. You simply come off as an anonymous pussy who talks tough but only slaps like a little girl, if you get my drift.
Jason is a nice guy but he was NEVER a cop. Ask any of the cops that he worked with. He was a suck up and was taken care of. Yes, he was a good school deputy and I imagine most of these posts are coming from personnel in the school system. Any cop that knew his "work" knows better.
He'll survive just like everyone else does.
The majority of you people absolutely blow my mind! Jason Chance is a person! When did police officers morph into super beings?
People make mistakes, its not like he was on the job at the time. Now he doesn't have a badge anymore...any of you screw ups lose your job because of a mistake in judgement while you were off the clock? I just don't understand where all the glass houses around here are? Must be a new development!
Walk in someone else shoes before passing judgement!
Ugh!
Thats such B S. Some other people that are .01 over the limit that didn't hit anything then run get a whole lot less penalty. Will he have to pay the 86 bucks a month for the next year? 30 hours community service... This sounds like another unfair ruling in reverse.
Jason Chance was our resourse officer at our school. He is a wonderful person and very good with the students. I understand he has resigned and, yes, he made a bad decision. I am truly sorry this has happened. Davis Ruark got slap on the wrist. Now, what is fair? I believe Jason will go on to bigger and better things in life. I wish him the very best.
Oh I will bet you a buck that any deputy making negative comments are those in the circle. It is the same old system. Bigger, Brighter, and even a little pimped out Bus, but it is the same old bus just a new driver. To those of you in house crying about Chance clean up your own back yards and get back to work. As for those on the "A" list keep kissing it, you seem to be dropping off one by one one. Two by criminal acts. Hmmm Hunter purchased an R.V. you all purchased R.V.s The new Boss likes Harleys you all bought Harleys. Are your R.V.s up for sale I am looking for one. Baaaaaaaa the sheep are walking. Mike lewis is a great leader. I just hope he has a clear view of the barn yard.
Joe, I know you cover your friends, start with exposing a chief in ocean city that just got picked up dwi, and another chief got him off, picked him up at the barracks. Go ahead, bet you wont touch that bug man
anonymous 3:30,
You're completely full of crap. First of all, the Chief in Ocean City is a woman and she doesn't drink.
Now, just in case you meant the Chief of the Fire Department, I called him too and spoke directly with him. He has not been pulled over for drinking and driving, period.
This is why anonymous sucks because they can just flat out lie with no recourse.
The vehicle Jason hit parks on the curb almost every night on this narrow road (Northumberland Drive). I live down the street from there and have to swerve to miss it at night when I go by (sober, usually). Since the vehicle is black, and no street lights, it's very hard to see. Don't know why the a-hole don't park in his driveway. Not excusing anything, but it's a wonder this vehicle hasn't been tagged more often.
He did the right thing and left
WCSO with some dignity. He screwed up and will pay for it over and over again in his mind for the rest of his life. I have seen people get less in Wicomico County Courts for doing much more. He got caught and has taken his lashes. He lost his pension, job, respect, and a piece of himself. Let's move on and let him as well.
I have heard that sheriff Mike Lewis is the closest thing to a perfect man. They say he does not drink, smoke, curse, chase women, or say anything negative about anybody. His word is his bond. He lives by the high standard that states if you can't say something nice or positive, then say nothing. Mike Lewis makes careful thought-out decisions. He is honest and lives the Christian life. He treats everyone fair and square. Wicomico County is fortunate to have a man of his caliber. Others could take some lessons from Mike.He has my vote.
To the idiot that said the US Marshall's will have a spot once Joe Abbott goes to court. First off, Joe Abbott does not work for the US Marshall's he work's for "I.C.E." Immigration & Customs Enforcement. Second learn how to spell Marshal's dumb azz.
I'm sure this won't get posted but someone will read it to not post it,and thats one who knows my veiw of the crime committed by a law officer.
The man committed multable crimes.I haven't seen someone idolized so highly for breaking the law in quite some time. The rat left the scene of the accident. This in my eyes is not a mistake but more along the lines of a concous decision to further break the law.Why is he not held more in contempt for committing these crimes when this man was suppose to be a model for our children,of which thank GOD he didn't harm while breaking the law.
And lets not encourage him to continue in his illegal acts any further ok? I'm so blown away at the biasness of all your comments.
A man of his intelligence, as it has been revealled, should of known better. And if not,has no place on our police force anyhow. So all you drink and drivers out there just keep on justifying this low lifes acts.Left the scene? What a scum bag.
Sounds to me like a hypocrit to me.Do as I say not as I do.Or i'll come bust you.
Joe I don't think you have found your calling.A person should have a standard that ALL should fall under. Not just those that don't like your boots.Or can benifit you in some way.How bout a little more less partial treatment huh? After all just cause Davis got away with it dosn't mean its ok to do.
I personally beleive that the penalty should be double for law officers committing crimes. They enforce the laws every day in their jobs, and to turn around a committ the very crimes they enforce is just not in any way acceptable. He should never get the chance to arrest anyone else ever again.
HAAHAH, serves him right!!!!!! He was very out of line before, karma is a bitch!
