Happy Maryland 6% Sales Tax Day

As many of you know, I live in Delmar, Delaware, literally just over the Maryland line. In Delaware we enjoy NO SALES TAX and even our property tax, (I have 7.5 acres of land, new home) whereas I only pay $1,200.00 a year. When I look at Delaware roads, (one of the biggest reasons for taxes in my opinion) I look at the roads in Salisbury for instance and then Delaware and I'm instantly convinced that taxpayers in Maryland are being screwed. Someone, somewhere, is lining their pockets because the roads for the most part in Maryland, SUCK!

John Robinson used to crack jokes on his failed Radio Show by stating Delaware has a bunch of dirt roads and trailers. John was always an Idiot but obviously he doesn't get around the Eastern Shore of Maryland much because Maryland has just as much, (if not more) dirt roads. The other side of that false pride that Maryland is so much better, how about Salisbury? The roads flat out SUCK almost everywhere you turn.

Start relocating to Delaware. Move your businesses here and ultimately move your residence here. Why you people are putting up with what Maryland is serving you, (a pile of shit) is beyond me. Maryland is NOT NYC. It's NOT Orlando. If you live outside of the Baltimore/Washington area, jump over the State line and check it out. The best way to wake up this Governor and to divorce the son of a bitch is move the hell out! It may mean you'll need to move out of the home, but so what! It's done all the time, just check out the divorce rate and foreclosure rate in Maryland.

Now if they could only open a Sam's Club in lower Delaware.

Sussex County doesn't have any dirt roads. They paved them all years ago. I don't know about Kent or New Castle.

To help make your point, your nose for news could have sniffed out this story from Bernie Becker at The Gazette on December 28:

Maryland may have recently won the title of richest state in the country, but that did not stop thousands of residents from fleeing the state last year.

Tax records show that almost 20,000 more people moved to other parts of the country from Maryland than moved to the state in 2006, the largest net loss in a quarter-century.

That marked the third consecutive year of a net migration loss for Maryland, after four years of gains earlier this decade brought a net gain of more than 27,000 new residents to the state.

I wanted to link to it but the link is too long for your comment box so I simply excerpted with credit.

Michael,

Perhaps you don't get it? What's cool about a Blog and different from a Newspaper is the fact that you can "create" an article/story and allow the commenters, (such as yourself) to come up with such said information.

You see Michael, I told a story about how I felt, not about another writer from a Newspaper and then copy it, like you suggest and or in fact did.

Maybe one of these days you'll come to realize that one of the reasons you get no comments is because you tell the entire story from beginning to end and you don't create it where it leaves any questions whatsoever. That's another major difference between a Blog and the MSM. Your Blog tells it all and only YOUR SIDE of the story, therefore, why waste the time commenting only to upset you?

Here at SBYBEWS.COM everything is open to opinions. You're not a Blog, you're a Blogue. Isn't that kinda like saying Glen Burnie is now Glen Burnet, (French) because their taxes went way up?

Anyhow, you're one of those suckers that bought in Maryland and couldn't ever dream of leaving. WHY? Because the United States knew property assessments were way too high, they rarely ever drop them and even though your property isn't worth anything near what it was worth a few years ago, you now can't sell it while they screw you with higher property taxes as well as every other tax they could impose on you and you're screwed.

So for a guy like you to come on here and ACT like he's the smarter one, look into the mirror and say it three times, I'm a Maryland Idiot, I'm a Maryland Idiot, I'm a Maryland Idiot.

Now I see how you get your information though. It's not based on what YOU know. It's based on what everyone else knows and says.

Well, if I'm so dumb then why are you holding on to property in Maryland yourself?

Perhaps I pay more in taxes but that's also outweighed by the short commute I have to my job where I don't have to deal with Route 13 (less money for gas). And if I want big ticket items, I'm that close to Delaware should I choose to purchase them there.

(By the way, haven't I also advocated the elimination of the sales tax on the Eastern Shore as a job creation move? The answer is yes.)

Everyone has priorities that determine where they wish to live, mine are different than yours.

As for the article, it helps to make your point so why are you ragging on me for the backup? Sheesh.

Guys, New Jersey's residents are also fleeing. Hopefully they won't spread their NJ liberalism with them. There was a news story about it on my blog somewhere.

Joe, I think Michael was simply pointing out that others agree with your assessment and defend your opinion. It's nice to have many people in your corner with facts and figures with them.

Michael,

Let's take a look at what I paid for such said Maryland Property and what it's worth today. I bought the old Pittsville Fire House for $50,000.00 and sold it in the $400,000.00 range. I paid $10,000.00 for the Powellville Store, what do you think it's worth today Michael? I'd say around $250,000.00!

I bought a home on 2 acres on Herring Creek in West Ocean City for $50,800.00. Even in a bad market Michael, what do you think that property is worth, a million?

I'm a SMART business man Michael and as I can appreciate your wondering why I may do the things that I do. I'm constantly making money when I do it.

I'll ask to go back to what you paid for your property and what it's worth today. You were screwed just like every other property owner in Maryland. The select few that were still buying properties over the past 3 years bought right and were not pushed into the old, I have to have it mode.

Look at the Feldman's Building. I had first right of refusal on that property at $1,000,000.00 and I chose to back out of the deal for two reasons. I didn't believe the market would do well with the Condo's across the River, I was right. I also had a strong feeling the Idiots in Salisbury would fall for the Mayor's Bullshit and actually not fight the tax increase, I was right. Even if the purchase at $1,000,000.00 was a good one, it wasn't the right time to make such an investment and it still sits today.

I have had many other offers in Maryland I have turned down over the past few years but 300 W. Main Street was a different story. Not only was that a great purchase, I now own property in the City of Salisbury and you know that pleases me for political reasons.

As for your short commute, I live just 3 miles from Rt. 50. I can access the Bypass in 4 miles. I do not have to come anywhere near Rt. 13 to get to the North end of Salisbury and I would never go Rt. 13 to get there as well. I can go Jersey Rd. to Naylor Mill, and I do just that. So to make it sound like Delaware would be an inconvenience, you're completely wrong.

As a matter of fact Michael, there's a new development going in just up the street from where Chiefy See lives. Starter homes, similar to the one you have now, except brand new. You can save all those taxes and probably buy right into a depressed marketplace. You should seriously consider it.

You can advocate a No Sales Tax on the Eastern Shore but who's kidding whom Michael? Do YOU really think they'll even consider it, when they're so desperate for additional funds for no real reason? I want MANY things every day of the week, but reality is reality. You just don't live in a reality kind of State Michael.

As for the article, "it helps to make your point" I don't need any help making my point. It was "my point" not someone else's. Or should I say, it was my opinion. That's something Barrie & Chiefy still need to come to understand. Hopefully you get there too?

Elbert,

I defected from Jersey, (the Caldwell's) years ago to Maryland. That was back in the days when I could purchase a small mansion in the Annapolis area for what I paid for a tiny home with no land in Jersey for.

I started out paying $1,200.00 a year in taxes on that property and when I sold it, it was more than $8,400.00 a year and we got NO SERVICES from the County whatsoever. I'd say it's more than $14,000.00 a year now.

I saw the writing on the wall and relocated to OC where I owned a water front property and only $2,400.00 a year in taxes. Once the market went nuts again, I sold in the highest time of the selling market and made out like a bandit. The taxes were going through the roof on that property and we chose Delmar, DE. as the next place to live, it simply made financial sense.

Do tell me, entertain me, what does Maryland have to offer that makes it so special? This I have to hear! I want to know why all of you are falling for this assessment increase and sales tax increase? The Governor knows if too many of you put your homes up for sale you'll have to lower the prices to compete. That encourages other people who couldn't afford Maryland in the past to think they're making out with higher taxes but lower false prices on a home anyway.

So it's not easy to sell and get out and you're punished sale price wise for doing so. Then you move here at a reduced home cost but you're screwed the rest of your life in Maryland by being forced to pay property taxes and sales taxes.

For those of you who received a 1% increase in pay last year, See Ya! Gone! For those of you who didn't get a raise, you're now in the red. Come on, all of you. Tell me why Maryland is so special to you?

I've always felt the complete opposite about the roads. Drive around by Bishopville and Selbyville. You can tell whenever you cross the state line into Delaware because you hit potholes.

joe albero said...

Dude, have you driven around Salisbury lately? What's the name of that road that runs along the river that takes you to WICO and so forth? That road has to be one of the worst roads I have ever seen in my entire lifetime! They'll re pave ALL the roads around the new Fire Station and as many big trucks that drive that other road by WICO and they refuse to stabilize the road and then re pave it, you're being screwed.

At least in Delaware, you get more than what you pay for. Try arguing/debating that one for a minute.

joe albero said...

Oh, and the Mayor's attitude is, let's wait till someone wants to build something in that area and make them pave to roads.

Barrie Tilghman, where did all the tax dollars that covers re paving roads go? That's a nice Volvo Convertible you're driving. Have I mentioned that lately?

Joe,

Why are you hopping up and down on Michael over this? He commented by essentially saying, "I agree with you completely, and here is more proof that you are right." You responded by taking him to task over the rather nebulus definition of what a "blog" is or is not, and what blog owners are or are not "supposed" to do.

Really, what is the point of your defensiveness on this. This is another example of how bravado and ego make this blog unreadable at times (which is quite unfortunate, since you do good work and bring a lot of issues to the forefront of community discussion.)

I do not know wither of you personally, but IMO you need to lighten up a bit. If you want a forum for debate and discussion, allow it, especially from those who are agreeing with you.

Dan,

My suggestion to Michael is my opinion as to why my Blog works and his does not.

He too can take it with a grain of salt, just as I'm supposed to with his.

Ask anyone here. They choose NOT to read Michael's because he is too verbose.

You won't fall asleep reading this Blog, that's for sure.

The street in front of Blair Rinniers former home was paved some years back and the road in front of T.J.Maloneys house was paved recently. Has there been any paving on London Avenue or out by Tide Mill? Figure that will be next. Sorry but Camden and Druid Hill will revert back to dirt roads if Barrie has anything to do with it!! And Shanie your whole neighborhood will be paved over soon.

The road out to WICO is Marine Road. Do you really expect any paving to be done back there? It's all rental properties, Pemberton Manor, the fuel tank farm. Barrie couldn't care less about those people, they don't vote.
