Impossible Demands From States Destroying The Bar/Restaurant Industry

While we do not know exactly what Governor Hogan is going to demand when we go into stage II and bars and restaurants are "allowed" to reopen but as you can see above, Delaware is making it just about impossible to survive.

In the noon hour I'll have yet another article/conversation with someone from Delaware. These restrictions are too difficult to survive with and yet we still haven't seen definitive instructions in Maryland.

While some commenters here claim I'm complaining, I'm broke, I'm flip flopping, clearly I'm a lot smarter then these fools think I am. I have a venue that is read by tens of thousands of people a day. I am the only one willing to put my name, (and money) on the line to tell the TRUTH and challenge people all the way up to the Governor. Clearly elected officials read SBYNews daily as it was proven last Sunday when more then 25 of the top sate officials held a 2 hour long video conference call specifically on Caribbean Joe's opening on Mother's Day.

Here's the difference between my bar and everyone else's. I own Caribbean Joe's, located in the very center of the Alamo complex. The concrete pad in the center of the complex is all a part of our liquor license. That being said, when you order to go food or drinks you do so ON my allocated licensed plat. When you step off that concrete pad and onto the gravel you are now on the Alamo property, two separate entities. Meaning you have left MY premises. No other bar/restaurant can make the same claim, none.

What we had done last week was in fact 100% legal and our local officials absolutely supported us on that fact in that 2 hour long meeting Mother's Day. I/We are simply trying to think out of the box in a very safe and legal manor. Yes, I had stated I did not want to compete with other bar/restaurant/liquor stores and I have given them TWO months to make whatever they could. Now we are very close to reopening and it is time we start gearing up for such an opening. HOWEVER, putting these CRAZY restrictions on us will kill us, all of us. Anyone who says anything different is a liar. There's no possible way anyone can survive on 30% of your allotted business. 50% simply means you'll be LUCKY to survive.

Last night the Maryland State Police continued to spy on Caribbean Joe's driving through our parking lot as if they were expecting us to violate the law. Last Sunday the Police went around to other bars/restaurants shutting down a car show and DJ stating they had just shut down Caribbean Joe's and proceeded using that claim to shut others down for lack of social distancing. IT WAS A LIE! No police EVER came by Caribbean Joe's last Sunday and they LIED to other businesses making such a claim.

We are living now in a police state. Our local officials know we would NEVER violate the law, ever. I have NEVER been cited by anyone and the only time I ever called the police in the past year and a half was a week ago during this shut down when I caught someone trying to break into my car. Does this mean the local Police are going to "police" our businesses? In fact, WHO is going to police social distancing and or ALL of these new regulations? Then you have to really wonder, is it worth the effort and financial strain to be in this business any more. The obvious and honest answer is, NO! I don't want the gestapo standing over my tables watching with a keen eye to see if you lifted your mask too long to take a bite of your food. The next thing you'll know they're going to want you to put dates on your masks and create new legislation on an expiration date for masks.

So what's next Governor Hogan? I put my finances on the line, took a HUGE risk redeveloping and recreating the old Alamo image into a new and vibrant business and now you want to cut me in half! How about the new Dough Rollers and the expense they've gone through. The new and upcoming Mulligan's. Seacrets Memorial Day tradition and income loss!!! I mean, you can now GOLF but you can't play MINIATURE GOLF? You are clearly going after Ocean City, the second largest tax income in the entire sate. You may have an R next to your name but it stands for RINO, not republican.

Open us the hell back up and get the hell out of our way. Play your give me financial relief President Trump with REAL numbers and not fake ones because you put so any restrictions on us human being taxpayers/businesses we can't survive. You are a dictator who needs to be removed from office and your damn right my name is on this article. We want no favors, we are true conservatives who want to EARN our keep and go back to work, not ask for handouts from our government.

It might be your government but isn’t mine. I refer to it as the government.

It rules over us.

Breathe Joe...we need you around our parts for many many MORE years...

Thanks for the article of truth!

Great summary Joe. There will be a LOT of bars that won’t come out of this. Oh, let’s see if the Democrats have a plan other than taking care of the lazy, entitled worthless mooches that keep saying their loving the money not working

Memorial weekend is going to be a HUGE shit show. People are coming they don't know what's open and what's not but they are coming. The rules are so convoluted they are going to show up and wander around wondering what they can and cannot do what is open and what is not. It's going to far worse than just opening up full tilt. The whole affair is ill managed under normal circumstances and this half ass shit failure will just send them back to the table for weeks to deliberate more to no rational avail. Everyone has a horse in the race ready to go and you can't leave they gate reigning back. Business doesn't work that way. Otherwise just keep it ALL locked down.

Doubtful the guy in Annapolis will read this even if hearing if it. He doesn’t give a chit about you or others. I was sooo happy to elect a R finally. He changed as fast a Louise Smith did on Salisbury council. These people must be hard up for a office to run on one thing when knowing they’re for something else. Sad indeed.

Very well put Joe.If from the beginning I had been apprised of the potential risk I would have gladly kept working regardless. If a waiver had been sent to me stating that if I continued to work it would be at my own risk I would gladly have accepted those terms and signed it.I can't speak for anyone else, but even the possibility of a brief sickness would not have deterred me.

The problem is decisions are being made on pure politics and not science and data. Politicians want to be perceived as being pro active and careful even when there is no reason to be either.
look to NYC specifically the individual boroughs and the numbers. If restaurants were at any time a risk of spread it would have been early on. The fact that Manhattan as a whole has less then 24,000 cases compared to Queens and Brooklyn which have double and then some speaks to the low to no risk in restaurants.
If you take it a step further and look to zip codes you will find the more under served areas of NYC have the highest number of cases and the highest death rates. The majority of the zip codes in Manhattan have overwhelmingly in the teens or lower ratio per 1000. In the poorer zip codes it is significantly higher into the upper 20's and nearing 40 per 1000.

Love it Joe. I don't go to OC because of it's Dictatorship government, but with this article I will go and support your business even having to fight those non-shore idiots that don't know how to drive and respect others. Will wait for your opening very soon. Adolph Hogan, aka Hitler, can only hold Third Reich together so long. His "elite" group will be brought down.

11:09 the rules are not one bit convoluted. They are quite clear and very easily understood. The problem is too many imbeciles are getting their "facts" from social media instead of governments' sites. Like the dunces hollering about people on the boardwalk not wearing a mask. The ignoramuses think you are required to wear them outdoors. Same with the idiots hollers about not social distancing on the boardwalk Too dumb to know groups of 10 or under always allowed.
And people aren't going to come down next weekend and wander around looking to see what is open and what is not that's just stupid. Anyone who comes down could care less what is still not opened. The beach is the main attraction in OC and that is what most care about who will be here. And no matter what anyone says what they read on FB no one is going to get infected sitting on the beach

This is good. Do you realize how many lives have been destroyed by Bars? The drunk driving, the lost wages, the broken marriages and families. Drink at home and be safe!

Great points
It makes me wonder if the release was in those poor neighborhoods to clear the way for more high-end development.

OC is a hot mess this weekend, in my opinion. People everywhere. Lines at all (open) carry outs. People sitting and eating out on picnic tables where they just purchased food in big groups. Lots of alcohol, and lots, of alcohol in cups up and down the board walk. I don't understand why you would want that, but not have Carribian Joe's (Or others) where it is easier to control, it is out side too, and the alcohol is in one spot. These people on the boards are being served more then they should, going from place to place. In a bar it is better handled and can certainly the owner can regulate it. I am so confused. It seems like we are really picking and choosing who can make money and who can't.

12:06 I think the high density population had a lot to do with it. It's areas know for high rise public housing. NYC public housing been under fire for decades. People have to wait and then crowd into the elevators that actually work so many are always out of order. The elevators (and common spaces) are filthy. The higher up you go there is hardly any water pressure because of leaks all throughout the building. This makes hand washing and showering less effective.
These areas have little option for shopping as well and they don't have vehicles to go to a store to shop. Someone sent me a picture. $11.99 for a can of Lysol from the neighborhood liquor store that sells a few food and cleaning items.

Add to that the public hospitals that have been under fire for years. Sub standard care and poorly run. Everyone knows about the sub standard schools in under served areas but most don't know that everything that is government run in these areas is as equally as sub standard.

I've heard many try and claim this is a disease that knows no barriers. Yes that is true to a point but there is no denying take out the nursing home/congregate living facilities and Covid has without question affected the low income disproportionately.

12:31 good point - also this is coming from someone who was incredibly against opening up Ocean City - but after what I have seen this weekend and its only 1:44 in the afternoon on Saturday - OPEN UP EVERYTHING -this is ridiculous - GOVERN HOGAN - who I think has done a incredible job protecting Marylanders - if you are reading this - OPEN EVERYTHING UP AND JUST THROW CAUTION TO THE WIND - the crowds on the boardwalk are NOT socially distancing - most are NOT wearing masks and more importantly most ARE NOT DOING THE RIGHT THING. JUST OPEN UP!

Why is it Florida is during so well. I went to my favorite restaurants the past two weeks - 2 sports bars, breakfast, a seafood place. Locally owned restaurants - loved by all. I wanted and still plan to support the locals. Only masks worn in Florida are those who are Democrats. Hogan needs to get a life.

11:47 what a dumb bastard you are. All the news is carrying the crooked FBI,CIA,NSA,that contributed to the blatant lies intended to impeach Trump, now backed up with documentation and you say 'read and trust the statistics they overblown by a million' and you tell me to believe them? I think the only imbecile on here is you. Man, Hope is beginning to look way far back in the rear view.

There aren't many business people who can handle these rules and the police state we are in. With your experience, knowledge and patients, you can deal with this. Unfortunately, many of the other business owners can't. It's similar to President Trump handling all the crap thrown his way and yet, he handles it. Trump may have been the only individual who could survive such attacks from the left and you may very well be the only Bar/Restaurant owner who can deal with this. And having a voice like Salisbury News, you are a bigger target. Many would love to see you go off the rail, but you know that. Keep doing what you do and thank you for sharing the truth.

Yeah past years nothing but trashing Ocean City.....now all the bars can’t make a living......can’t have it both ways!! Sorry folks!

So let me get this straight, the bars make the drinkers drive drunk rather than taking an Uber? The bars make the drinkers cheat on their partners? Wow! I’ve been too many bars many, many times and Bars never make me do those things. Those things are irresponsible choices made by the person drinking at the bar! Betty’s husband must have went to a bar, met a woman, drove to the woman’s house drunk and didn’t come home to Betty and her family. Betty’s husband apparently made Betty believe it was all the “BARS” fault he made those shitty decisions. Thanks for the laugh Betty!
