Three wrongfully convicted men each awarded $2.9 million in damages

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The Maryland Board of Public Works approved a total of about $8.7 million in compensation for three wrongfully convicted men on Wednesday.

Alfred Chestnut, Andrew Stewart Jr., and Ransom Watkins were each given about $2.9 million in damages for spending more than three decades in prison due to convictions for a 1983 murder of a Baltimore middle schooler. They were exonerated in November.

“These were kids in middle school, and are only now getting the freedom they deserve and should’ve had all along,” Nancy Kopp, the state’s treasurer, said at the Board of Public Works meeting.

With this post are you hinting that Wicomico County May be facing a similar outcome X 600+ past convictions.

It kept them out of trouble.

What you mean cops can be wrong???? That innocent people get locked up for no reason but so the DA and cops can have a good record????

This can't be, everything is for the kids!!!!! And cops are hero's and wouldn't lock you up even if you didn't commit any crimes!!!!

Education is important as you know. However, throwing more money at it is a Democrat's dream. First we must stop low income by supporting Border control and eliminating illegals in our school system. Second, we must give back teaching to the teachers - they are not babysitters. Teachers should be allowed to discipline students without fear of losing their jobs. Let's start with basics and then work with greater ideas. I'm sure you folks can come up with solutions other than throwing money at it.

Northwest Woodsman: While we are in the act of projecting what they lost over the years of incarceration, let’s project the crimes they were unable to commit because they were out of circulation. The only way these characters would have made the amount of money calculated on a flawed formula, would have been if they were successful entrepreneurs in the undocumented pharmaceutical trade like we see among these pages on a regular basis.

Not saying they were guilty or not but there had to be a reason for even being a considered a criminal. Let's face it people they really don't grab a individual out of nowhere and put them 😂 n jail. Had to be a connection 🤪

The state will find a way to tax it and recoup some of the loss.

Woodsboy, normally I would assume someone like you has quite the sad existence living in your own little fantasy world. Then I come here to see that actually you have found a few similarly delusional friends here on this board. lol. Im a pretty avg. black man. With a 6 figure salary, I'll easily eclipse that amount in 30 years of work.

Wow, $100,000 per year for attending prison for 30+ years. Plus free room, board, and healthcare to boot. I believe that is what is called overcompensation, to say the least. If not in prison, the most they would have likely earned was $30,000 per year, and probably much less than that. Turned out pretty well for them.

Keep reading his posts. He is the most racist visitor on this blog. Sadly, he claims to be a retired cop. On the bright side, he is retired and 3000 miles away from us.

@119 You're an idiot.

And we're supposed to think THAT is an intelligent response? Your comment speaks to your mentality.

Corrupt cops, corrupt prosecutors and corrupt judges...thats what happens. And yes....this is exactly what salisbury is facing. And like usual...the corrupt wont pay the cost nor punishment for their wrongs.
The amount of money? Whats 30 years of you freedom and life worth to YOU?

Everytime you speak you say the same rasicist things. It's hard to believe that someone is content that three men spent 36 years in prison for a crime they did not commit and you are okay with it
Because they might have committed crimes had they been free all these years. Who know where there lives might have led had they not been incarcerated. There are sucessful black men just as there are unsuccessful white men. Plenty of criminal people from both sides. You commit a crime you should pay the consequences, any race. You get incarcerated for 36 years and you were innocent you should get compensated, any race.

Northwest Woodsman: When facts and truth offend someone sensibilities you know you are on the right track. Those of you who are offended by facts, please refute mine with something substantial other than emotion and feelings. If I allude to racial problems, I am not making things up, I am stating facts from multiple sources. Take your Baltimore for example. You could not manipulate the facts sufficiently to cover for your demographic crime and corruption issues. Slavery has not been active in this country since the 1860s so don’t try to fall back on that for lack of significant accomplishment. I’ll admit, however, there are some success stories, however they are few and far between and then one must ask if affirmative action policies had anything to do with the result. Ok 12:51, I agree that there are numerous blacks with six figure incomes and that includes street thugs selling drugs and prostitution, rappers who chant unintelligible, obscene lyrics, and worthless “celebrities “ and sports personalities who would be in prison if not for their athletic talents and I could go on and on. Truth hurts doesn’t it big guy? Just sayin my retirement is in the six figure range so that is nothing for you to brag about. I guess I am just an equal opportunity bigot that detests dirtbags of all races, creeds and colors.

Actually they do doofus. You just choose to not educate yourself on history.

Boring. You have your own little fantasy land. We get it. Enjoy. 1113 think about woodsman's tirades then tell us again how the innocent arent snatched up. Lol

All I have to say is stay out there. Don't come back. Nobody liked you in school and nobody likes you now. That's right, I've figured out who you are. Wasn't hard. You can keep your mouth shut.

Northwest Woodsman: Thanks for proving my point. Everything in your comments are emotionally based and you have not and probably cannot refute what I have stated. In my comments, I have no motive other than exposing liberal happy talk about racial issues. I have no animosity towards any particular race and I base my judgment on individuals per Martin Luther King’s philosophy. I am guilty of gathering facts from many different sources and incorporating them in my comments.Facts and truth sometimes are painful but trying to gloss over and manipulate them to fit your beliefs a scenarios will never be successful. Please refute my comments with facts and statistics. I’d love to be completely wrong and I am willing to change my beliefs if someone can present valid information to support the opposite narrative. Unfortunately, arguing with liberals and trying to change their emotionally based beliefs is comparable to playing chess with a pigeon.

Woodsman How does saying three innocent men should be compensated make anybody a liberal or a conservative. You can use all your statistics you want. Even if 95 percent of black people committed crimes, it still would not make these men guilty of something.

Yea man that's a crappy thing to say. I'm a white country boy who does construction so i get it but you can't predict there future. That's like saying those things about you. I get talking about em if they actually did something but they didnt. SPEAK LIFE!!!
