Wicomico Hires Law Firms To Fight Opioid Companies

SALISBURY – Officials this week agreed to hire Texas law firms to represent Wicomico County as it takes legal action against opioid manufacturers.

On Tuesday, the Wicomico County Council agreed to hire the law firms of Ferrer, Poirot & Wansbrough and Fears Nachawati as it pursues litigation against opioid manufacturers for their alleged role in the country’s opioid crisis.

Last year, the council opted against joining counties and municipalities across the nation in a lawsuit. Earlier this month, however, the issue was back on the agenda for discussion.

While Sheriff Mike Lewis said litigation would allow the county to hold opioid manufacturers accountable and recoup money that was redirected to address the opioid crisis, Council Attorney Bob Taylor cautioned the council from taking any immediate action. He noted a multi-district case, pending in federal court in Cleveland, could be converted into a class action lawsuit, making it possible for municipalities across the nation to receive some compensation from opioid manufacturers.

"...some compensation from opioid manufacturers." Texas attorneys will snatch at least 40% of the awards, if any.

Didn't know the drug companies we're prescribing fentynal these days @12:28. Lewis is looking for another 5 minutes of Fame again and the council just bends over for him. Maybe you should step away from that desk job and do some real work for a change

Lewis is looking for another reason to get an invite to the white house!! Law enforcement knows damn good and well the opiod problem is out of control and and nothing they can do about it. Truth be told they want no parts of the cartels

Does anyone really know how much this is going to cost Wicomico county? If Wicomico county council is responsible for this decision they all need replacing as soon as possible. Hiring lawyers in Texas and not waiting for a class action lawsuit to be filed is so premature. Those pharmaceuticals have far more money to fight with than little ole Wicomico county. The Texas lawyers are grinning ear to ear waiting to get their hands on that signed blank check. SMH

These lawyers couldn't give a crap about the victims of opioid addiction. The scum bag lawyers are after the deep pockets of the drug companies.

I have known and worked with many many lawyers. I have never met a lawyer that has a moral compass.
