JUST IN: House passes bill to raise minimum wage to $15 an hour

The House of Representatives approved the Raise the Wage Act Thursday, which would boost the federal minimum wage for the first time in a decade.

In a 231-199 vote along party lines, the House passed the legislation that would increase the minimum wage to $15 an hour, more than double the current rate of $7.25. In an even more drastic increase, the bill calls for having the same minimum wage for tipped workers, raising it from $2.13 an hour.

A report from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office predicted that approximately 30 million people would see higher earnings as a result of the bill, bringing more than one million out of poverty.

"America's workers deserve a raise," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said at a press conference before the vote.

How many of those 30 million will lose jobs due to the increase and employers forced to cut their workforce? Only thing this is doing is putting more legal workers out of a job, and freeing up positions for illegal workers, for the companies willing to take a chance and hire them.

These people simply don’t understand their creating inflation

Yet keep allowing slave wages to servers! Waitresses get less than $5 a hour and tips are shared with the kitchen staff! Slavery didn't end!

taking a million out of poverty while putting 20 million into poverty. Look at all the millions just making around that amount that went back to school to get it. Now will be back at minimum wage with student loans to pay back to boot. All the time and money they spent going back to school gone right out the window. NO employer is going to give a offset of what that person makes now vs what the dead burger flippers will be making all in the name of "pulling ones out of poverty". Now for you 20 million hard workers that will be going back to minimum....welcome to the cesspool.

Ruining businesses and restaurants since people are having less money to go out to eat and then leave a 20% tip. "RIDICULOUS" and another form of Socialism.

I love this debate. I was making over 15 dollars an hour with no education in the 80's. Fast cash at the ATM was 20 dollars and that lasted you for days. Now it's 60 dollars and your lucky if that gets you to work and home again. If a small business can't afford to pay people do it yourself MA and POP. In places with no public transportation 7.25 is a cab ride. The only small businesses left are crap shops, boutiques and cafes if you can't afford a franchise license go to work for one of them or THE MAN and live on minimum wage. I love that they justify it by borrowing and incurring all the risk. That's all fine. Do it yourself then. Small business has a real outdated PLANTATION mentality. If a small business is your vision and dream than work it 24/7 for 20 years put your mother and your kids to work. That's how it use to happen and still does. We could learn something from ambitious immigrants.

Share with the kitchen staff? We shared with the runners and busses. I think I may have slipped the host staff some on ocassion. If I remember correctly, if we didnt make good tips, enough to average it to the minimum (5.25) they had to pay us the difference.

HOW STUPID DO THOSE A@@HOLES THINK WE ARE!!!
They don’t want a $15 per hr minimum wage either.

Small businesses need a tax and regulation cut then we can raise wages.

Now the burgers will be $14 lol.

The simpler solution is to either reduce Congressional pay to the minimum, or to raise the minimum to current Congressional pay level. Pretty sure I could muddle through at that level and we'd all do equally well. /sarc

I've had to "Service" the manager to keep from getting fired! And yes, as a waitress we pooled the tips at the end of the night to divvy them up with Hostess, Busboys, cooks, dishwashers, and us. If came up short boss said show more cleavage! As far as anyone leaving 20% maybe 4 out of 10 tables do. Seniors are good for $1 each. Asians no tip, Blacks 10%. Everyone likes to eat out, but skimps on the tip.

Congress is getting ready to go on their Summer break (whole month of August). Didn't they just take 2 weeks for the 4th of July holiday. What do they know about 15 dollars minimum wage. Nothing.

Tipping is silly. Do you tip your Doctor, Lawyer, Mail person, Wal-Mart or Dollar store checker? Just set a price and I will pay it and you pay your employees. You should be the one rewarding them for their service and loyalty not me. My giving you my money should not be so arbitrary.

The main problem is wages haven't kept up with inflation for 30 years. Workers shunned unions because of all the propaganda being fed to them by the greedy corporations and the main stream media. Now someone has to suffer in order for workers to make a living wage. Who will it be, small Ma & Pa businesses or workers without a trade or college education, both which actually have and still are losing income due to corporate greed. I don't know what the answer is, but I do know that bringing more illegals into the work force is only making it worse.

Spoken like a worker and not a boss. Most Ma and Pops aren’t the problem with pay, it’s your corporations

The problem is the US Dollar
It was inflated into oblivion
It buys nothing now (has little value vs. natural resources).

Thus the US Military has to bomb Countries to get their natural resources. Nobody wants the US Dollar because it is being inflated

Deficit spending is a TAX
Period

This is sad. What happened to earning the wage. We are giving a person $15 per hour when they don’t deserve it. What happens to the person currently making $15 per hour? You going to give them $20 per hour? Good luck with that. Unemployment will skyrocket. Prices will increase. The poverty population will double because companies will only be able to keep one employee instead of two. Illegals will more jobs paid under the table than before.
