Paid Sick Leave Law Goes Into Effect In Maryland

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Maryland’s new sick leave policy has gone into effect.

It took a lengthy battle, and faced many setbacks from both Gov. Larry Hogan and the state Senate.

While most Maryland employers provide paid sick leave, analysts estimated about 700,000 people didn’t have the benefit which this law will now change.

Supporters have been fighting to pass Maryland’s paid sick leave policy for six years.

It passed last year, but was immediately vetoed by Gov. Hogan.

“This legislation is an ill-conceived, poorly written, complicated and confusing, and inflexible mess,” Hogan said after it was passed.

In this area there are so many seasonal (3-4 months work) jobs.
Anybody know how it will affect those workers? I can't find any reference to it in the stories.

3:47 No, it's a nail in the coffin for the people that depend on small businesses for jobs. The good news is when you get sick you'll get paid, the bad news is you won't get paid because you won't have a job.

3:15 PM The Act requires that employers with an average of 15 or more employees (including full-time, part-time, temporary or seasonal) in the prior year provide their employees with paid sick and safe leave.
On the other hand, employers with an average of 14 or fewer employees (including full-time, part-time, temporary or seasonal) in the prior year need only provide unpaid sick and safe leave.

My question is why don't they carry over year to year? By not doing so employees will use it at end of year if they have it. Some people will abuse this. I am all for paid sick leave, I had it at previous job and had over 100 hours when I left that I was never paid for.

Easy to say when you’re not the one paying for it.
At least when they lose their jobs when small businesses close their doors, the unemployed will have their free MAGA hats, right?

PRMC doesn't let their employees use the sick time they give without it counting against your record. That's why half the employees are coughing, sneezing, and wiping their noses. Yet their number one priority is paitent care? They care about one thing, the money!

5 paid sick days a year for hardworking full time employee is reasonable. Small business with 15 employee's or less will not be affected, which is also reasonable.
So Im not sure why Hogan was against it, maybe because there wasn't anything in it for him?

I'm in HR in a state with paid sick leave. Since the law took affect, there are always about 5 or 10 employees out of 80, who use up there sick time almost as fast as they earn it. Out almost every month and we can't question it unless there is a clear pattern. Most of the rest of the workers barely use sick time. It's pretty clear how well it works in this case.

In MA we have had paid sick leave for a few years. It's mostly only used by a handful of chronic "sick" people who use it as soon as it's earned. We can't do much about it either as the law doesn't allow discipline unless there is a clear pattern. It's benefited valid sickness in a few cases, but mostly it's just abused.
