Survey: 44% of College Students Say Hate Speech Not Protected in First Amendment

Villasenor noted that the survey was vital because students are "de facto arbiters of free expression on campus … if a significant percentage of students believe that views they find offensive should be silenced, those views will in fact be silenced."

Most students in the poll believe incorrectly that hate speech is not protected by the First Amendment. Villasenor said hate speech is "odious" but protected as long as it does not violate exceptions such as speech that incites violence or contains "true threats."

44 percent say it is not protected.
39 percent believe it is protected.
16 percent said they did not know.

Another question examined the tolerance for controversial speakers at public universities, and whether disruption of their speeches was acceptable.

The 1st Amendment never guaranteed that everyone must LIKE what you said. It simply gave you the right to say what you felt.

Trump Won! It feels good to say it. Don't like hearing it, move to Canada.

At least 35% of college students have no business in college; they are just attending because it's the current thing to do.

There used to be a thing in this country called respect. Respect for your elders, respect for your parents, respect for society, respect for YOURSELF. It seems that respect, in general, has gone to the wayside. Free speech, what is allowed or not, did not have to be defined because of the respect people USED to have for themselves and the people whom they were talking to.

Now, everyone is offended by what someone might say. Sometimes that offense is warranted, as there is no respect giving in whatever is being said.

A lot of times people are offended by what is said no matter if respect is given or not. They just don't want to hear it, even if it's true. If it hurts anyone's feelings, it is offensive. It may be offensive to the person whose feelings are hurt but certainly not to everyone else, but they pretend it is offensive to them to stand in "solidarity" with the one who is really offended. The so-called PC culture I guess.

My wife tells me I have no filter. Whatever pops into my head comes out of my mouth. So I guess I am not PC sensitive or whatever.

And that's fine with me. I don't really mean to hurt anyone's feelings, sometimes, but I say what I say and that's it. Like it, lump it, I don't care. I think I just admitted I can be an a-hole. Again, I don't care.

To me, free speech is free speech. Anyone can say pretty much anything they wish. Hurt feelings be damned. But regardless of how this sounds, I do try to be somewhat respectful and really do not go out of my way to be hurtful, unless someone said something I don't like or I don't particularly care for someone.

I wish people would get off their little soap boxes and try to correct everyone else about what they can say or can't say, what is acceptable or not acceptable, etc etc etc.

Get over it already. This crap has been going on for far too long. Be a man! Be a woman! Be a freaking ADULT!

Ok, my rant is over, for now. If you didn't like it, I don't care. Get over yourselves and live your freaking life.
