Salisbury, MD – The Golden Retriever Club of America National Specialty will be held at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center and nearby venues from Sept. 22-30.
To provide safe passage of attendees, spectators and dogs, a portion of Glen Ave. in front of the WY&CC will close Sunday, Sept. 24 at 7 a.m. through Saturday, Sept. 30 at 10 p.m. The closed portion runs from Civic Avenue to St. Albans Drive.
The Potomac Valley Golden Retriever Club is hosting the National, with the theme of "Paws 'N Claws" – fitting for an event held on the Eastern Shore, known for Chesapeake Bay seafood and crustaceans.
The event is expected to bring over 5,000 attendees to the area, resulting in a hotel room night demand in excess of 6,000 and an estimated economic impact of nearly $5.7 million.

It's time they raise the hotel tax to a new maximum, and I mean like 10 to 15 percent on top of the regular tax, when these events that block the road come to town.
The money raised, then put in a fund to put in a crosswalk above or below ground.
Let theses event attendees pay for it with their hotel bills. Not the taxpayer. I'm truely sick of these road closures.
So they have a few hundred people show up for a dog show maybe a thousand and they have to close the street.
What will they have to close for a hundred thousand at the folk festival.
Get over yourself there more important things to worry about then a tiny road closure.
This event is way more successful than Jake's joke of a festival will ever be.

What on earth can they find to do for 8 days with these dogs?
Why are 5000 attendees needing 6000 hotel rooms? So each of those 5000 attendee will spend the average of $1,140, for the love of their dog, hmmm.
From at least 1985 people were able to cross the street for events at the Civic Center, even when a mall was on the the other side of Glen Ave.
During the reign of Slick Ricky locals and visitors suddenly lost the smarts and ability to use a crosswalk. So Slick closed the street for a variety of events even though the detours were laborious.
I think this approach should stop. Put a cop or crossing guard at the crosswalk and most of the traffic that uses Glen Avenue could still proceed, albeit a bit more slowly at the crosswalk.
How many of you are making any money from this dog show? The chain hotels and restaurants make money and the local employees are paid minimum wage. If you have money to eat out, now you have long waits for tables. We started leaving town when for the seagull bike race because of the traffic and crowds. Glad we moved from the area for the majority of the year.
Just close down that section of road permanently and be done with it.In a few weeks everyone who uses it regularly would adjust to other routes.People in that section of town have been spoiled anyway.
Closing that road is total ignorance. You get a new tenant in where Labinal used to be, and your screwed. It may keep a new tenant away.
We need More jobs, not doggie shows blocking the roads.
In the past there have been an abundance of air streams and RV in parking lots on both sides of the road for the dog shows so I'm not sold about the motel room rentals or $ flowing into local economy at such a fast pace. Maybve we can get final numbers after the event.
When are the people who frequent that civic center going to learn to cross the street and not have to have the street closed for them to walk across the street?
