NFL protests: Stars could get off their knees and lead a constructive conversation on race

As more than 100 NFL players protested during the singing of America’s national anthem across the country Sunday, what had been a small protest of the way police treat African-Americans turned into a much larger protest directed at President Trump.

The flare-up started on Friday with the president’s blistering attack against the NFL, the NBA and several players, telling a political rally in Alabama: “Wouldn't you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, 'Get that son of a b---- off the field right now.' "

President Trump continued his barrage over the weekend via Twitter, calling on NFL owners to “fire or suspend” players who kneel during the anthem and saying that fans should boycott teams with any kneeling players.

Yet lost in the war of angry tweets and protests is the original reason for the fight: alleged police mistreatment. Groups like Black Lives Matter and sports figures like Colin Kaepernik have long held that there is widespread police violence against black and brown people in America.

Kaepernik said: “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color…. There are bodies in the street and people are getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”

But is he right? A study by Harvard University says no..

I wonder how much Soros ( or Hildabeast) paid kapernick to do that.

Amazing how Kim Davis was hailed as a hero by conservatives for protesting gay marriage at work (refusing to sign a marriage cert.) but here are football players protesting at work and it's suddenly not okay.

3:52 you've made a good point. Allow me to present one of their famous counterpoints: snowflake

3:52 doesn't even compare. she didn't disrespect the flag, or our soldiers.

Out of pure disgust, we cancelled our NFL package with Direct TV....they told my husband they have been flooded with calls, complaints, cancellations...these spoiled crybaby snowflakes should get off their collective butts and do some good for the country, not "protesting" some made up BS. My forefathers would cringe at this disgusting lack of respect for flag & country.

Kim Davis was never a non-political sport.

Sports never had politics in them, just fair competition, winners, and striving for team and personal perfection.

That's why we watched, to leave that all behind like the 9-5.

Now, that's over with football, and baseball wants to join in now. I'm sure the NBA will be close behind as soon as season starts again.

So far, there's still NASCAR to watch. Maybe this will bring their popularity back, I certainly hope so.

When I sit down to watch a sport, that's all I want to see; not some yahoo's "agenda"!

What Irony! NFL stands for NATIONAL Football league, not Black Football League. Protesting our country and its national symbols in a taxpayer funded and built football stadium is wrong. The players are just plain stupid if they don't realize that. They have become a mouthpiece for their tribe, and certainly not the nation. The protesters are Anti-Americans. They deserve what is about to happen to them. The fans will decide their fate.

The NFL players are paid to play football. That is their job. That is what they should be doing. We don't give a rats a-- how they think politically or about any other thing. Just play football. That is what you are paid millions of dollars to do.
