According to a series of tweets by another passenger, who identified herself as the founder of a gun control advocacy group, the girls were required to change or put dresses on over their leggings before they were allowed to board their flight from Denver to Minneapolis.
"The passengers this morning were United pass riders who were not in compliance with our dress code policy for company benefit travel," the airline said on Twitter as the incident Thanwent viral on social media.
In another tweet made in response to a question from a social media user, the airline said: "Casual attire for ticketed passengers is fine. The passenger today was a United pass traveler and follow different guidelines."

I agree with the Airlines.
I have flown under the company benefit travel program with Delta. I was told by the person that let me use their benefit specifically " Dress business casual minimum. No jeans, no tennis shoes, no tee-shirts etc. Collared shirt, khakis, casual dress shoes." Either the person letting them use their benefit did not expressly tell them this or they did not listen.
They are not sexualising anyone. Its called a dress code for a reason. Either you are within it our your are out of it.
Furthermore I have had people try to wear them to work. I have told them to not to wear them anymore. They look trashy. At best they are workout gear. Are you on the way to or from the gym? Fine. Are you going to work? Pump your breaks turn around and change.
IT's a company employee and their families dress code, so United has every right to enforce their own dress code.
I kind of like leggings, especially on a fit woman. Best invention in the last 30 years! You can dress them up or down. These girls must have looked sloppy.
i think most women look amazing in leggings. with the right butt, they can turn a 4 into a 7 just like that.
I have also flown under my friends buddy passes. It was the summer and I was flying to Florida. I was not allowed to wear sandles. It is simply a dress code. You are flying on a discounted company benefit. You must dress as the company says
Leggings should be outlawed they are hideous. You always see them on trashy Walmart sites for a reason.
Sandals are not safe to wear aboard any aircraft.

The teens were traveling on 'company pass'. The company has guidelines for what people using the 'company pass' can wear.
when traveling on 'company pass' you are essentially representing the company. If they have a dress code in place for those representing their company, then you agree to dress appropriately. It could be someone forgot to pass that information on to the parents and the teenagers; if the teenagers chose to not follow the guidelines, then they got what they deserved -- removal from the flight.
sounds like a lesson was learned; perhaps next time they will pay more attention.
