Impound lot loss closely tied with towing industry’s future

If Ocean City government ends its decades-long regulation of the local towing industry, tow rates will increase dramatically, car retrieval convenience will go down and visitors will suffer.

That’s what Chris Cropper, of Cropper & Sons Towing and Recovery, said after learning that the council was considering a new hands-off policy brought about by the planned redevelopment of the Public Works Department property. That is where the city’s impound lot is located and the construction of a new Public Works campus would leave no room for that.

Currently, tow companies must follow rules and rates set by the council nearly a decade ago. The standard tow is set at $150, and if a second tow truck is needed, the rate is at $75. The storage fee at the 65th Street impound lot is $10 a day, and $15 for each subsequent day.

Regulate the cabs so they all have to charge the same and de-regulate the towing so any slack jaw yokel with a truck can force a kings random out of a trapped family of vacationers.
The beaches will be less crowded, there will be less traffic, and we won't need anymore Russians once they finally make OC so bad that people don't want to go to the beach.

Nothing is Ocean City that important, I'll be staying away from there and I suggest everyone else do the same.
