Feds cite D.C. charters for high suspension rates, particularly for black students

Skeptical questions remain over how much support Betsy DeVos will provide traditional public schools in her new role as secretary of education.

But there is no doubt she is a big fan of charter schools. She and her husbandinvested in K12 Inc., the nation’s largest operator of for-profit charter schools, whose quality has long been questioned.

With her devotion to charters and her perch at the top of the educational bureaucracy, DeVos, who took office after a tough confirmation hearing in which her fitness was doubted, is well positioned to push efforts aimed at correcting the high and racially twisted disciplinary practices of Washington’s charter schools and to determine if similar patterns exist elsewhere.

Pulling the politically correct race card. Blacks get suspended more because of their actions end of story.

4:53 is on this correctly - it's just like the arrest and conviction rates...they do more stuff that is not within civil standards!

Some of these standards are already too loose - but they would scream forever if we really made it right!

As if charter schools have the ability to magically and instantly change the poor behaviors of some students who never knew better and bring the street to class with them. If the same scrutiny and unreasonable expectations were given to a group of inner city public schools, the teachers' unions and the Dems would be all over it in faux insult mode.

Dear Readers,

I am of the opinion that President Trump will install free market competition in our educational institutions, thereby forcing them to compete for those tax dollars. Regardless of Public, Private, or charter, the field will be leveled and parents will be able to choose what best fits their child. I no doubt expect the public school system to howl about how unfair this is, but the solution is quite simple - produce a better product than your competition, which is of course the heart of capitalism. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds.

Regards,

I BELEIVE charter schools shpuld only admit students that are trying to escape public school..kids who have little or no discipline problems and get decent grades...then you won't have this BS about suspension and African American kids..and yes they are worse than other races..I've been a sub and seen it first hand..they are a product of their parents not raising them right.- .there are more black kid in touble because they have a culture of wild behavior and not conforming to societal standards..

I agree, they act like animals and it's in their DNA. People forget to think about where their ancestors come from?? African jungles. And that is a fact!

No offense, but aren't DC schools overwhelmingly a higher percentage of black students? Just sayin... if the black population is already disproportionally responsible for more crime, then shouldn't a mostly black population have an even higher participation rate?
