OCEAN CITY, Md. (AP) — Maryland residents can expect forthcoming changes to the 911 system.
The Daily Record of Baltimore reports (http://bit.ly/2bDQ1gc) that the expected phase-out of Verizon’s traditional landline-based system — plus Federal Communications Requirements mandating more precise pinpointing of geographic locations for 911 systems — means Maryland’s 23 counties and Baltimore City are faced with making the move to an internet-based system by 2020.
It’s unknown how much it will cost for Maryland, which handles over 5 million calls annually, to move to an internet-based system.
