Breakdown Of US Citizens Killed By Cops In 2016

In the U.S. a total of 509 citizens have been killed this year alone by police. The body count for the previous year stands at a grand total of 990 people shot dead, according to the Washington Post. As the below infographic from Statista shows, most of those killed by police are male and white. 123 of those shot were Black Americans. This is a relatively high share, keeping in mind that close to 13 percent of Americans belong to that ethnic group.

It would be interesting to see what each was doing at the time of being killed by police. "Minding one's own business" probably isn't high on the list.

You never hear about the White men being killed by Police of course. I would like to see a Breakdown of how many Police officers are assaulted and or killed in one year. People state they fear the Police no one stops to think maybe the Police live in fear of the suspects they confront. Its called putting your life on the line every day to protect and serve the citizens of this country.

There is a small number of these that might be considered "suicide by cop". Many of those might be in the mentally ill category.

cops will have to shoot some types of people some of the time, but there are many that did not need to be shot, as evidenced by the hundreds of millions of dollars in settlements WE have to pay out each year.

THOSE are the ones we should be focusing on. The unjustifiable ones.

10:20 AM - I agree.
I would add that the onus of determination of whether a shooting is justifiable, though, is on police agencies and courts, not public opinion, the latter too often grossly mistaken. When erroneous information is jumped on by the media and drilled into all of our heads 24/7 to the exclusion of all else, and then jumped on by activists or self-serving types who then get undeserved media attention, it results in immeasurable damage to society.

thanks, and I agree with you as well. Had this officer been wearing a body cam and it being turned on and operating, all of the speculation would be non-existent. They do have dash cam but I doubt it will show what we need to see. And now her credibility has taken a hit.

I originally believed her telling of the events, especially after the Minn Gov. more or less back what she was saying but now I am not so sure.

Simple statistics people. The majority of criminal activity is not in your gated communities. Though being poor is not a crime it surely plays a role in where crimes are committed. Hence when roughly 40% of your patrol spends 90% of their time in poor areas there will be a higher number per capita of those people being shot. It is not racism it is basic criminology and economics. I get some of the uneducated spouting this racism stuff but educated people really???

Don't Blame me I wasn't even there.
