Former Senate leader Dean Skelos gets 5 years, fined $500,000
"I let things go off the rails," former state Senate Republican Leader Dean Skelos told a federal judge Thursday morning, shortly before he was sentenced to five years in federal prison.
His son Adam, convicted alongside him on eight felony counts in December, was sentenced to six and a half years.
The state's most powerful Republican until almost exactly a year ago, Skelos will be required to pay a $500,000 fine. Both father and son will have to jointly forfeit $334,120.
Like former Assembly Democratic Speaker Sheldon Silver, who was sentenced to 12 years in a separate corruption case last week, Skelos still will be able to reap his nearly $96,000-per-year public pension
"I want you to know that I am deeply remorseful," Skelos told the court as he apologized to his former constituents on Long Island.

Well it's about time.
He wouldn't be remorseful if he hadn't been caught.
And yet he gets to keep his 96,000.00 pension. I guess he can use that to pay his fine or like Al Sharpton he can get on the 90 year payment plan.
Every state government needs to review and revise its policies regarding crimes of elected officials and how it should affect their pensions. When the crimes are committed on the public's dime, the pensions should be rendered null and void.
