BALTIMORE —Police tell the 11 News I-Team that the new riot gear is dramatically different from what they relied on during April's violence in Baltimore.
While they're hoping not to use the new equipment, they said they will to protect citizens and themselves if civil unrest breaks out again.
This comes from lessons learned during the April unrest. Police said the gear they had was inadequate and now they are confident the new equipment offers better protections.
"We put the helmet on first, because we teach you are just one brick away from losing command on your line and the helmet itself is our most vital piece of gear we have out there," said Detective Robert Himes, Baltimore City police instructor.

Looks like catchers gear.
Times have changed.... My ass. Bottles ,rocks and bricks haven't changed one bit. The fact is the police have realized that they aren't all that even with a 250 of their buddies! It boils down to a false sense of security. I'm glad that the cops get to feel what the American people feel everyday. Hopefully it humbled some of them.
It's not like shooting unarmed hippy kids at Kent State, the kids in the ghetto fight back.
Wtf are u talking about moron?!
You weren't their, I was!
The guards at Kent state needed to be reprimanded and retrained, all that shooting and so few hit and killed, sad, very sad...
Their?
8:31,
What a complete idiot. You have no idea where you are right now, do you?
Or is it wheir, or derr, or they're?
It's hard to try to fix stupid. I'm giving up on that...
How about the rights and freedoms taken for what? So we can be safe? Ok! Like gun laws. Criminals are still getting guns. But sheeple feel safe because of words on paper. Like you officer. You feel very safe with your badge and gun. Even safer when your buddies are on scene. Unstoppable when your in riot gear with hundreds in your small army. But you realized your not. Nkw you cry for more protection. Thing is that gear is no safer then the gear worn in the riots time. And when these new suits fail as well ,you'll realize that false sense of security again and cry for either tougher reactions against the public to disperse or new suits again. Lol!
Kent state was army national guard not police moron.
They were men in uniforms with guns - nuff said.
Would you rather have the savages running like a hamadryas horde through the streets, completely unchecked?
riot gear means nothing if you are told to stand down
