Ben Carson 'Flabbergasted' at Prisoner Perks

Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson said this week he is "flabbergasted" at some of the perks offered to prisoners behind bars.

According to the Washington Post, Carson spoke to a group of young Republicans in Arlington, Va. on Tuesday.

Carson said he has visited federal prisons, which President Barack Obama did last week — making him the first president to visit a U.S. prison.

"I was flabbergasted by the accommodations — the exercise equipment, the libraries and the computers," Carson said. The former neurosurgeon added that he was informed that "a lot of times when it's about time for one of the guys to be discharged, especially when it's winter, they'll do something so they can stay in there."

Carson then said the criminal justice system is putting too many people behind bars.

"We're not doing things the right way," he said. "A lot of people that we incarcerate don't need to be incarcerated."

When asked later about his comments during a chat with reporters, Carson went further.

Prisoners get far better access to medical issues than the residents in nursing homes. Prisons have far more staff and far larger budgets. If an elderly person wants medical attention he/ she is much better off committing a crime and going to prison.

Bring back the chain gangs and make prison the very unforgettably unpleasant experience it is supposed to be.

Our prisons should be modeled after the prisons in a foreign country.

Put the prisoners in chain gangs and make them do hard labor. Make them all sleep on the floor and let them eat tomato soup or broth all the time.

No access to free medical care, no access to to books, internet or a free education. Do not allow them to have access to weights. Why to they let the prisoners build up and then attack guards. Duh! Something is wrong with this picture.

Prison may have these "amenities", but it's still prison, with razor ribbon and chain link, steel bars, cinder block walls, concrete floors and ceilings, crappy food and mind-numbing routines. And that's not including in-house gangs to fear, drop-the-soap surprises and a high volume of seriously crazy people who have little to lose when it comes to inappropriately interacting with others. If you haven't been in a prison, you just don't know how it is.
