WCBOE: REVISIONS TO THE 2014-2015 SCHOOL CALENDAR

Wicomico schools have been closed nine days in 2014-2015 due to weather and road conditions. The Board of Education approved the following calendar revisions last month and at the March 10 Board meeting:

Tuesday, March 31: Early dismissal day for students, with schools dismissing two hours early for students to give teachers time for professional development work. (This had previously been scheduled as a full school day, but is now an early dismissal day.)

Tuesday, April 7: Regular school day (Professional day on that date moved to June, after the end of the school year). Wicomico students and schools will now have a regular school day on Tuesday, April 7 to make up one missed day. April 7 had been scheduled as a professional day, with part of the day for SLOs (Student Learning Objectives). Now, teachers will have time on March 31 to work on their SLOs. Parents and guardians of students who will be absent on April 7 due to prior family plans must provide the school with written notice before April 7 for the student to have an excused absence for that school day.

Thursday, June 11-Wednesday, June 17: Wicomico students will make up five of the nine missed school days by attending on these days, as stated on the approved 2014-2015 calendar. June 15, 16 and 17 will be early dismissal days.

In the near future, Wicomico Schools will apply to state education officials for a waiver of the remaining three missed school days. Without a three-day waiver, Wicomico’s school year would end on Monday, June 22. The outcome of the waiver request will be announced once a response is received from the state, with further adjustments made to the 2014-2015 school calendar if needed.

And I did not see it noted on here that Bennett Middle School students will end on June 5th, so please someone explain if the students need to satisfy 180 days how are they able to finish on June 5th?

Agree. This is just WRONG! Not fair to my son who is in middle school. What's fair for one is fair for everyone?!

That's just WRONG. Not fair to other kids. Make them go just as long.

Fast Freddy just had to get a dig in about the condition of the roads. The county did a great job on the snow removal and the roads were better than in years past. Freddy is a sore loser and doesn't want to lose his pot of pork that's all he's worried about. I think we should vote Freddy the Freeloader out and elect a new school board.

Why do they do the half days near the end of the year? If they went whole days, they would be done sooner.

Teacher professional days should be done in the summer when school is out for the kids. Then they wouldn't have to worry so much about extended school year.

They do it for all the schools that get renovated so what is the big deal about 180 mandatory school days?

Why do private schools get 170 mandatory days, but public schools have to do 180?

You obviously don't know anything about local politics. WE don't elect the Superintendent and we don't elect the school board. Pay attention.

You are correct on the road conditions though.

Because they have to have lunch to call it a full day. Good question though. If you can have 3 "half days" at the end you are just killing time to satisfy a mandatory requirement. Everyone knows that the last to weeks of school is a waste and the kids don't do anything except field trips.

Aww... you are jealous. I bet you wouldn't be on here complaining if you child was going to Bennett Middle or getting out on June 5th.

My kids last day is going to be as scheduled. Those snow days are crap. I hope to see parents follow. Don't punish the kids over poor leadership. Make him answer to empty schools.

We have the longest school day in the state. Can't we count hours like they do in Delaware?

Field Trips?
Before sounding like an idiot, (everyone knows). Why don't you do some research on the schedule guidelines

Another misinformed person. Where do you come up with these ideas?

Anonymous said...

Not true. They serve lunch so it counts as a full day.

No. COMAR says schools must be in session 180 days and 1170 hours. Is not OR.
