Boehner Says He’d Allow Homeland Security Shutdown

WASHINGTON — The House speaker, John A. Boehner, said Sunday that he was “certainly” prepared to allow funding for the Department of Homeland Security to lapse, raising the possibility that one of the government’s largest and most vital agencies could be shut down at the end of the month.

Coming just two months after Republicans gained full control of Congress, a shutdown would be a major political problem as the party tries to honor a vow to govern responsibly and cooperatively.

It would contradict a pledge from Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the majority leader, who said the day after his party won decisively at the polls in November, “There will be no government shutdowns.” And it would exacerbate a rift that has been growing between Republicans in the House and the Senate.

“The House has done its job; we’ve spoken,” Mr. Boehner said on “Fox News Sunday.” “If the Senate doesn’t like it, they’ll have to produce something that fits their institution.”

He's right. The Senate DEMS are blocking action on this, and if DHS isn't funded it will be the Democrats' fault.

Best option: pass the bill as is with the nuclear option in the Senate, and send it to the President-- make him sign it as is, or shut DHS down himself.

9:31. No. Dems aren't blocking anything. It was a stupid political ploy by the Republicans to attach a ban on a legal executive order to the DHS funding bill. What's even more ironic is DHS is responsible for for our borders. No DHS funding....plenty of open border for even more illegals. This congress is just as pathetic as the last one.

9:45 You are a moron. Yes, DHS is responsible for border control and has done nothing but allow millions of illegals to enter our Country and suck on welfare from us working people.

Yep, Bush's fault.
Your pathetic dems have had nothing to do with anything the last 6 years.
Those mean repubs. How dare them try to stop your King's wishes.

9:45, you are just spouting the democrat line.
The borders are already wide open if BP agents aren't allowed to do anything, aren't they?
The republican majority is doing EXACTLY what the overwhelming majority of the voters sent them to do-- stop this unlawful amnesty.
They were not sent to 'compromise'.. they were sent to fix the problem.

9:45, another government school educated person commenting here. didn't they tell you how a bill is made? I grant you it's not pretty, that's why they call it sausage, but it's now in the Senate and the dems in the Senate are holding it up.

Hey 9:45 - the voters gave control to the Republicans to do exactly what they are doing. I applaud Speaker Boehner for getting stuff to the Senate. Harry would not have even brought it up for debate like Senator McConnell has...and the dumbocrats are not willing to even try to attach amendments.

It's the dumbocrats' fault!
DHS has been mostly useless since its inception (yes - never waste a crisis to build government) with TSA being the worst money drain for their presentation of false security. The POSOTUS has been hindering the Border Patrol to the point they are ineffective.

Shut that agency down and close the doors - we don't need them!

9:45 They, the House, has not defunded the DHS they just won't fund Obamay's illegal alien amnesty part and the Dems are trying, once again, to blackmail the house into passing a bill how THEY want it. If anything is shut down it is because the Democrats and the President refuse to move on the budget, which is the job of the house by the Constitution to draw up. Besides DHS does not control the border because the Pres won't allow them to enforce the laws on immigration. Our laws are not a Burger King menu! You don't get to pick and choose which ones to enforce and which ones to just 'look the other way' over as Obamay wants them to do! Keep drinking your Kool aid 9:45!

Hang tough, Mr. Speaker! The money has been appropriated by the House for the legitimate functions of the agency. The bill strips out funding for the illegal/unconstitutional action of the president.

The only roadblock to paying the employees is Democrat senators blocking 'debate' on the House bill as a prelude to an eventual vote in the Senate.

Hang tough, guys & gals; you're doing what you were sent to do...stick to the Constitution and the enumerated powers!

9:45 What year did you drop out of school? It's ok if you use your fingers to count. I suggest you know the facts before you comment.

225 years we did just fine without a DHS, and since 9/11, has failed to stop any terrorist attacks.

Let them dissolve.

Shut down DHS in the middle of the Isis crisis is not a show of leadership by the Republicans it is treason. Send a clean bill.

1:24 ISIS is across an ocean mate. Besides, the biggest threat in our Nation is exactly what they are trying to stop, amnesty.

1:24 According to Obama the ISIS is not a crisis. Remember he said it's just a JV team. It's work place violence just like Fort Hood. Get your head out of your @ss and understand that Obama is a member of the Muslim Brotherhood.

1:24 must be related to 9:45....

Actually - they did send a 'clean' bill...'cleaned' of the unconstitutional overreach funding!
