Toddler accidentally shoots and kills his mother in Idaho Wal-Mart, police say

A woman was killed in an Idaho Wal-Mart Tuesday morning when her 2-year-old son accidentally shot her, according to local authorities.

Kootenai County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Lt. Stu Miller said in a statement that the boy was seated in a shopping cart when he reached into his mother’s purse and fired the gun.

The 29-year-old woman, who deputies found dead on the scene “from an apparent gunshot wound,” had been shopping with the toddler and other family members, Miller said.

A little while ago 2 people on the radio were discussing this & made a valid point; If the gun was not cocked already how did a 2 year old negotiate the slide action? Even if it was a revolver the trigger would have had significant resistance for a 2 year old to pull.

That kind of thing doesn't happen at Whole Foods.

Tragic. Not only for the mother but for the child. Can you imagine what state of mind it'll be in later on in life? Perhaps it would be better to lie to this child.

Say what you want, stupidity was involved if this even did happen. Sounds like something staged so that we can say guns are not safe for women and children.

Staged???? Are you effing kidding me? This is a tragic incident for all. Gun owners must be vigilant in safety at ALL TIMES.

She was obviously leaving her cart AND CHILD,AND POCKETBOOK for at least short periods of time.Shopping has to be one of a womans biggest diversions, especially when this woman had to have both hands free to fulfill her mission. That sort of absent mindedness lends itself to everything bad, including theft and child abduction. This tragedy should be a lesson to all.

10:50 Some modern sidearms are cocked only once, with no "safety" to speak of. I'm guessing that is what she had, where it's ready to fire if needed. She's an idiot for leaving a firearm, let alone a toddler, alone for ANY amount of time.

I have several sidearms with the same action, and it does take a good pull on the trigger to fire, however, they can be easily modified for a lighter trigger pull.

10:06-Please excuse my gun ignorance, but would one classify the sidearms of which you speak as Saturday night specials? Or are they intentionally manufactured in the manner you have described?

Its just a tragedy. Its not a good reason to ban guns or make a new law. Its not a time to demonize political opponents. It's a time to feel empathy for the child, the family, and to ensure we all take great responsibility with our firearms.
