Marylanders have no clue. Attacking big business seems vogue for liberals. Well here in Maryland we rank in the bottom 10 of all economic indicators. I have to ask. Do you feel the prosperity or are you just trying to complain?
what these idiots don't realize is that a lot of their other food is fertilized with chicken manure...if they only knew what makes the sweet corn sweet and the tomatoes so tasty....how about all those lush green lawns all along the waterfront, golf courses that are so green.....
This is just another instrument of hate from the leftist aggressive progressives. They have no legitimate cause other than to try to stir hatred and jealousy for a company that provides employment for thousands that pay taxes and supports these fools through welfare, wick and food stamps so they can complain. How about we cut off welfare, food stamps and every other giveaway to those that do not deserve it and divert that money to those that work and earn a living? How about we divert some of that money to the Bay restoration fund? How about we stop blaming chicken Companies for all the crap. They are PRODUCTIVE and have value. How about blaming those that do not produce anything but useless stupid crackhead children that can not be educated and suck off the system all their useless lives? I think they crap in the bay too.
I'm not so naïve as to not know, so many chickens grown in such a small area, isn't optimal for not only the waterways, but the land. I am also not so naïve to know, any tax would only get passed on to consumers, so "Big Chicken" still wouldn't be held accountable.
Instead of even thinking about any new kind of tax (which would ultimately be passed on to consumers) how about everyone getting all riled up over the misuse and raids (stealing from) of the Bay Funds. That would be the prudent thing to do. Whether we are for or against Perdue, everyone should be upset over this.
Aside from the fact that the major chicken producers take better care of their products than their people (as witnessed by the layoffs and closings while still paying exorbitant executive salaries and bonuses while laying off their employees), this is representative of that creamy white stuff on the top of a pile of chicken-$4!t...more chicken-$4!t.
Recent Baltimore Sun editorial quoting Bill Satterfield, director of Delmarva Poultry Industry-
"The chicken companies do not own the manure. They do not own land to which it is applied. They do not control the environmental practices of the farm families who grow the chickens, and they do not control the farmland on which it is used. How can the chicken companies be responsible for something they neither own nor control?
Yes, phosphorus levels in our waters are higher than desired."
He clearly admits phosphorus levels are too high, but tries to take the blame off of "Big Chicken."
Couldn't agree more - Big chicken companies should be paying to restore the bay, not me, I didn't do one thing to destroy it, but yet as just everyday person I have to pay. Makes absolutely no sense to me. The bigger the company, the less they have to pay, just what is right about that?
If they want to fix this properly, they should require (in the contract) the company that takes the chickens - take the $4!t...that way the farmer does not bear the burden.
There are companies on the shore that recycle the $4!t - they could be contracted (at a price) to take the 'product' from the other organizations....
A few years ago PBS had a documentary entitled Poisoned Waters attempting to answer the question of who owns the manure- the farmers who raise the chickens or the companies that not only provide the flocks, but dictate every aspect of the operation including what the chickens are fed (which must be purchased from them.) The common sense answer would be whomever owns the chickens owns the manure after all if you own a dog, you are responsible for it's waste. This is the problem. The companies pass the manure and other waste (dead chickens) off on the farmers who at times are at a loss with what to do with it.
Hey folks look at the reports. PA has been and still is the largest polluter of the Bay! Who are the big Poultry companies in PA??? That's right there are none! Get another horse to ride, manufacturing and sewer from rundown cities is the real issue. Poultry companies are easy attacks since they employ the majority of the people and their business is open to every inspection possible. Not saying they don't pollute BUT there are OTHER BIG FISH HURTING THE BAY!!!

7:02-I haven't a problem with anyone making a big salary. What I do have a problem with is them doing it at tax payers expense. The handful of good paying jobs these companies produce, does nothing to offset the many many more poverty level wages they pay, which is a burden to tax payers because we are paying for welfare benefits for these people.
A company is not a success when the business model reads sponging off the tax payers.
First lets see the Bay Restoration Fund's books and find out where all past money went.Most money likely goes to re-elect democrats.

Bay restoration is a scam! Where does the money go, and how much of it is for political pay offs? I thought the rain water tax was to pay for the bay? Why not just have your lobbyist pay the shitacrats to just ban chicken, and then you can protest some other just cause like wind farms?!?

Manure has nothing to do with excess phosphorus in the soil or water. I have been around longer than most of you; I was here before "big chicken" was even thought of. The majority of soils on the Eastern Shore are naturally high in phosphorous now, and were before chickens were such a big industry. I can point out farms where manure was NEVER applied and they have the same phosphorus levels as fields where it is applied regularly. I have taken soil tests in woodland that was NEVER farmland and the phosphorus levels are just as high. The whole pollution by manure idea is just a lie.
7:54-I have no idea if you are correct, but assuming you are, does that absolve the fact that the director of an organization, which is pro "big chicken", not only admits the phosphorus levels are too high but admits "big chicken" isn't responsible because it's the growers problem?
Perdue has been raping the Shore for long enough. Until the locals realize it, it'll continue. Let them leave, like they always threaten to!

How many millions of gallons of raw sewage got dumped into the Wicomico by Salibury alone obe the last 40 years with a slap on the wrist. Just as other municipalities all thru the drainage area for the Chesapeake. Farmers are rerquired to have buffers and all kinds of documentation and regulations on manure usage. Jim Perdue can take a leak in the Wicomico and get fines $75k, but Salisbury can flush the sewage system and get fined $1.2K
9:23 you're dead wrong. Perdue has provided good paying jobs for thousands of families on the Eastern Shore for many years. They are good people and want to continue to do a good job for their employees and our region.
I think all these Perdue defenders really need to willingly pay more in taxes. Unless and until you all do, you have no credibility. Tax payers are sick and tired of paying for their employees, the majority of which are in the processing facilities and make poverty level wages and have to rely on welfare of some form to survive.
You all need to start paying their rent yourselves and paying for their kids lunchs and their medical care.
You can't make chicken salad out of chicken sheet. Maybe nuggets but not salad….

This must be why Royal Farms does not use Local Chicken. They wish to protect the Bay!!!

Are you sure about that 2:50? I happen to know for a fact that RF's (at least local locations) contracted out to Mountaire a few years back. Not sure if they still do. They used to deliver to RF's 2 days a week.

That all well and good 11:23, but let's not forget the state of DE tax payers also invested a million dollars in the form of a state grant towards the recycling plant which is located in Seaford.

I have to ask WHY is MARYLAND always being attacked because of PERDUE? Hello DELAWARE - how many chicken plants do you have? AMICK FARMS - ALLEN's never here anything abbout DELAWARE PAYING UP!
