NO BUT THEY SOON WILL BE... oh and they will unionize also so...

I thought college was about school not making money for sports...

in the form of tuition, yes. but they need to keep their grades up. but above & beyond that, no.

Anonymous said...

Yes absolutely.

Anonymous said...

Not directly. Put it aside for after graduation.

They are already paid in the form of tuition, room and board and meals. In addition they are given training by the coaches to hone their skills to become better at their chosen sport. They are also given free medical care for injuries. If they work hard on their education they can come out with a degree. So as far as money goes they should not be paid.

I'm with 2:05 - their primary task should be to get an education! No good grades - no good plays!

sure pay them to pay, but make them pay tuition and get passing grades in real classes

This is a new definition to the phrase "Professional Student." Hell no they should not be paid to play an extracurricular activity while in college. If you want to offer them a scholarship with a certain GPA and attendance, and keeping your nose clean then great, but a salary? Someone has lost their mind.

lmao, are you people stupid? everyone and I mean everyone from companies running commercials to the tv stations, the announcers to the committee's and their representatives to the colleges to the AD's, the coaches all make money off these kids! and a lot of it! so why shouldn't the kids get something back even if only a stipend? highest paid state employee in darn near every state is that state's football or basketball coach! go figure!

Being a student is not supposed to be a true "Job." That's what "Professionals" are...people who are paid to do what they do.. That's why we have "Professional Football." "College" means: noun
1.
an institution of higher learning, especially one providing a general or liberal arts education rather than technical or professional training. Compare university.
2.
a constituent unit of a university, furnishing courses of instruction in the liberal arts and sciences, usually leading to a bachelor's degree.
3.
an institution for vocational, technical, or professional instruction, as in medicine, pharmacy, agriculture, or music, often a part of a university.
4.
an endowed, self-governing association of scholars incorporated within a university, as at the universities of Oxford and Cambridge in England.
5.
a similar corporation outside a university.

If it's put into a trust, or some kind of Bond, where they can touch it until they graduate... YES. If they get a "paycheck", then NO. They already have zero responsibility to learn, and get educated... handing them money will make it worse.

No. It is enough that they can play their way to a degree. It would be a slap in the face to the schools if they had to pay them on top of everything else.

Anonymous said...

NO, !!!! And they dam well better get good grades also!

Anonymous said...

Say what?? Who said they are not paid?? Must have been a gov't employee, everyone else knows better. It's called "benefits" and "under the table". anything but "cash" payments are too easily traced.

What is the next step? Five years from now we unionize high school players. Lets use common sense folks. Education first, sports second.

This is a very hard argument to have. I won't take a side but I will say one thing. Of the people who believe that they should be paid, I think most are of the opinion that the school makes so much money off these players that they should get a cut. Instead of paying these players, maybe they should have protection from the school profiting from them (i.e. no named jerseys, no use of photos in promos, ect.) If someone were the posterboy for Penn State prior to the sex scandal, their name would be tarnished without them being involved or making a dime off the use of their likeness. And for those that think that colleges give football players an education, thats not always the case. Often they just get a degree.

I am confused..so, if these guys are not there on scholarship, then they pay to go to school, and then you want to give them a paycheck for playing football..Does this not make sense to someone else either? There is zero logic here. Wow. 4:38 and 9:24...I heart you.

College athletes need to be held to the same standards as the average kid to even get into college. Those who cannot should simply go right into professional sports. The colleges themselves have set the stage for this debate by making a profit using the "student athlete" as the slaves for their financial gain. Without a willing college and the participant, there would be no espn, fox sports, and the sports would be a simple game for the people. The smart people have let money corrupt education, and sports, nice job!

What and raise tuition even further? Hell no! Who's gonna pay the money required, besides parents?

Anonymous said...

If they unionize and you pay them, then its earned remuneration and taxable.

Here is another rub. Get rid of all scholarships, athletic and academic.

Anonymous said...

How about we just drop the pretense of 'athlete scholars' altogether? Those schools that feel it is necessary should just hire players to represent them - no free tuition, no attending classes, no degree, no mixing with the student body. Like so many things, college sports have just become ridiculous.

Here we go with the union thing. No to union but yes to pay. In a form that could be used to further education or give them a start after college. I know all you brainiacs hate ball players. The bottom line is in major D-1 football and basketball they bring millions into the univeristy. So find a way to play it forward. Less then 1% will make it to a paid level after college. Some have horrific injuries that last for a life time.

The sad fact is some will just buy bling lol.

Anyone who has ever played on a college level knows it is a freaking job. There are only so many sholorship slots per team over half of the team gets nothing. It really does suck.

So, all you should have to do to get a free college education is play a sport? Seriously? This country is out of control! Are we going to play males and females to play not just football in college but soccer, hockey, softball, baseball, lacrosse, equestrian competitions, archery, swimming, etc.? This is ridiculous!

Anonymous said...

Hell No!!!!!!!!! They need to get an education and get a job!!! Cause they are not as good as they think they are!!!

In Divorce Court a judge once told me I had to pay to play. That was just before he hammered me with child support and alimony.
