School in wicimico county doesn't just drop everything they do to close school. They have to end a specific time when school is closed because of snow and that time is like 12:45 pm.

6:59-because it's not like the old days when Mother didn't work and would be home. My relative works at a school on the Western Shore and has told me it's mass chaos when they dismiss early esp on the bus drivers who don't know what to do, when dropping kids off and no one's home and they are locked out.

Lawsuits that's why. The last time a storm of this size came, school's were dismissed after the half day deadline required by the state. Many busses slid of the roads and a few got stuck. I'm sure they are erring on the side of caution and at the time they made the call, predictions were that it would start snowing at 9 am. That has been pushed back according to the weather channel to noon, though the national weather service says 10.

This is absolutely ridiculous. Even the BOE Central Office is closed so John Fredericksen and his staff get a free vacation day to stay home. WTH is the snow? Not even 1 snow flake has fallen yet. They should have tried to complete a half a day anyway so they don't have to go during the Summer Break when parents have already started planning their family vacations.

I looked all over for these lawsuits and could not find any. Could you please elaborate? I value your expert authority so please show me some guidance into find your material to help cite your sources. Thanks in advance.

7:31-lawsuits against bus companies involved in accidents due to road conditions are very much real.

According to NOAA , snow is going to start falling between 9 - 11am with blowing snow at 11am.
As crazy as it may seem right now without a snowflake in sight this was probably a good move. Only time will tell

7:31-Without elaborating too much 7:24 is correct. You don't hear about these lawsuits because they are settled in the $40,000 to $50,000 range. They usually involve a bus fishtailing and kid flying off the seat.

Central office is not closed, moron.

I for one am glad they aired on the side of caution for my children.

You criticize when they are open and criticize when they are closed... I'm glad they did . Now people won't have to worry bout their children getting killed in a bus accident!!! Give it a rest,,,,

The days of personal responsibility are clearly behind us. As a parent you are in control. If you feel it is not safe, then keep your kids home.

I for one, would have liked for them to go to school today. Since they didn't they will make it up in June. So when the kids go to school till the end of June or when summer school starts, I hope you are not bit**ing then too.

I should have gone into teaching. That's the best job in the world!

And I hope 8:02 isn't trying to teach the kids to spell on their day off!

Saint Francis is open.

anonymous 8:29, Thanks for the heads up. ALL parents should be driving HUGE SUV's with 4 wheel drive, preferable with a BMW, Mercedes or Cadillac emblem on them just to make sure you can take your kids to and from school in conditions like this.

"It's For The Children".

6:59 AM because some parents would complain about being inconvenienced. Schools have been closed since Friday, now you wish schools to open half a day, crank up the heat, etc. Makes no sense as schools will likely be closed tomorrow.

How many of you would be willing to drive a bus, being responsible for safety of the children?

Don't like these "little bumps in life's road" than don't have kids. Responsible parents have a back up plan. You complainers need to put one in place and stop blaming others when situations like this a raise.

Get the government to ban snow, so schools won't have to close in the winter. When you figure out a way to control the weather some folks will still complain.

Think of the inexperienced teenagers driving in potential white out conditions, that could be going on at the time they would be heading home. Not to mention, the responsibilities of the bus drivers driving in the same conditions. It's different when it's only you and or your immediate family in the car...I personally think they made the right call.

"Injury" usually is the old "lumbar strain" and involves a lawyer experienced in the area of "slip and fall."

Energy costs factoring in perhaps?Does anyone recall the incident in Seaford a few years back when the school roof caved in? My understanding was that if adequate heat had been in that building that would not have occurred, because snow could not have accumulated to the breaking point.True,it was unoccupied and at night, but a little heat is always necessary.

I look at it this way, no one knows what time the snow will start falling. Unfortunately, some students are on the bus for over an hour. If they closed school the minute the first flake falls ( and believe it or not it takes preparation to close), once the bus picks up at school, it may take more than an hour for the last student to disembark. I'm pretty sure not many parents want their children out in the conditions that were forcast for this area.

Blame the Weathermen, not the schools. They were just reacting to the forecast presented by the weather professionals. As it turns out, school could have gone on all day without any problems. However, still a good decision with the information at hand 5am this morning.
