New Mileage Standards Would Double Fuel Efficiency

The Obama administration has finalized regulations that will force automakers to nearly double the average gas mileage of all new cars and trucks they sell by 2025.

The rules mean that all new vehicles would have to get an average of 54.5 miles per gallon in 13 years, up from 28.6 mpg at the end of last year. The requirements will be phased in gradually between now and then, and automakers could be fined if they don't comply.

The regulations, announced Tuesday, will change the cars and trucks sold in U.S. showrooms, with the goal of slashing greenhouse gas emissions and fuel consumption. Automakers will need to improve gasoline-powered engines, and sell more alternative fuel vehicles. Critics say the rules will make cars unaffordable by adding thousands of dollars to the sticker price.

Europe already has an engine at 68 mpg, and it is not allowed in the US. Why? Because fuel is taxed by the GALLON over here. Selling us only half the gallons cuts the gas tax in HALF! The government wouldn't want to shoot itself in the foot by allowing such an engine to be sold here!

Sounds like good news for Briggs & Stratton, and for Schwinn.

The fuel efficiency will not double.
Fuel efficiency is na measure of how much work is done for a given amount of fuel used.
The amount of work done is = to the weight moved over a distance.
If the MPG rating is doubled, then the amount of work done is halved for the same amount of fule used.
In other words... trucks and cars will be getting smalled and capable of carrying much less.

Yeah 8:14 that is exactly what has happened, because my new Ford doesn't haul anywhere as good as my 70's Ford

Fuel Efficiency Standards are a JOKE!
I've yet to see ANY President follow through with them.
It's a "talking point" for them all.
Might as well ignore them!
Vehicles WERE getting better gas mileage and then the government said, "Oh, let's add ethanol"!
What a BAD IDEA!
Who's PAYING the price, we, the consumer while the Washington Elite don't care, what's a few extra dollars to them? They made it when they got money and or other perks for voting for this BS!
