Farmers who want to keep the family farm in the family and in business when the owner dies hope that a law signed last week will do just that for agricultural homesteads in Maryland. The Family Farm Preservation Act signed by Gov. Martin O’Malley aims to protect the future of the family farming by substantially reducing death taxes on many smaller operations.

I am not a fan of our leader in the state house but I applaud him for his support of this legislation.
Why single out farmers? There are literally thousands of different small and large family businesses in the country! Divide and conquer?
Believe me, I love farmers, but we must love everyone else just as much or we'll be doing it wrong.
Amen 7:29, so we are going to save farmers but continue to screw anyone else and tax again what has already been taxed before.
Yes the legislation is good however it does not go far enough and is unfair protecting only farmers.
Families would be more than able to pay this tax IF their contracts with Big Agri business paid them more, instead of keeping them in debt. Omalley ought to be honest (for once) and tell the real story, but instead he bows and kisses the butts of big business all on the backs of other tax payers. Don't be fooled into thinking this is anything more than big corporation propaganda!

Because the 1/2 dozen or so food producers that control our food supply has a stong lobby and also the Farm Bureau which is nothing more than their mouthpiece.
Whatever they can do to get away with paying the contract farmers more money they will do.
This is another example of "corporate welfare" and how they manipulate the public's thinking. They are losing contract growers due to this tax, so instead of paying them more, they lobby for this tax reduction and everyone thinks it's a wonderful idea.
Buy directly from our local farmers even if it means paying a bit more-From Farm To Table.
