why would the police be using pepper spray. These kids weren't doing anything wrong in my opinion. the police need to be patroling the ghetto part of town where crime happens. Do you think they would pepper spray in the ghetto? I don't think so.

They were throwing beer cans at the police.
I want to know who cleaned up this mess. There is trash all over the place. A total disrespect for someone elses property

Wow. Good thing the police were there to stop all that fighting, drug use, and crime. At ANY moment half those cops could have left to go down on Isabella St and busted 10 different drug deals going on in what is pretty much an open air drug market. But THAT might invlove getting their ass whipped or shot. College kids? Easy to fine, easy to mace, beat up and bully. The slumlord lawyers and developers in this town (home of one of the highest percentages of RENTAL housing IN THE COUNTRY) rent cheesy little houses to college kids (because the town allows the college to expand exponentially while NOT expanding housing and parking to accomadate that same expansion) at outrageous rental prices, then freak when college kids do what college kids do in their spare time. Party. I guess the same slumlords are mad that they aren't getting their cut. Didn't look like a rowdy, out of control party to me. That is, until the cops showed up. THEN it got rowdy. Who knew?

Just listen to the music in the background, and that will explain the unrest. It's ok to party, but not for the sake of trashing the place.

Those students should count their blessings that they got mace instead of getting arrested - I can guarantee you that a lot of them were underage and those that were 'of age' provided the alcohol. Include disturbing the peace and failing to obey an LEO (order to disperse). If I had been that SPD in the video, I would have cuffed them and stuffed those idiots who kept harrassing him and following him trying to get him "on tape". Sad that all of it will get swept under the rug in the name of the almighty dollar. Whoever cleaned up the mess should send SU and Rinnier the bill. This new generation gives the alumni a bad name. (at least we partied at bar - the Phoenix).

Classic towny police that are un-educated and just pissed that the college kids will make tons more money than them.

It happens everywhere there are towns like ours. True they won't dare go into the bad areas on a regular basis and take care of the horrific crime that is going on.. rapes, drugs, murders, gangs...

you're right.. college kids are easy targets.. they don't shoot back

Not a black thing.music was rap but only black guy I saw was the d.j..calm down there .

"...Classic towny police that are un-educated and just pissed that the college kids will make tons more money than them."

Hardly true. The police officers have jobs, are earning incomes and paying taxes. Approximately 60% of the students will actually graduate and approximately half of those will find employment in their field. The rest will be underemployed and most will not earn near the salary of an experienced police officer.

7:21 is a stupid cop. You LEO's better start understanding math. Take a look. At ANY time they wanted to, those hundreds of college students could have killed every cop standing. You cops didn't bring enough bullets (especially considering you need a full clip to kill one person) to enforce your tough guy tactics. Thats the reason you dumb lugs DON'T roll up on Isabella street. Things would get out of hand REAL quick and you would be on the wrong end of it. Stick to playing bad-ass with middle class white kids majoring in history. You'll be much safer. The old "disturbing the peace", obstruction of justice", and "interfering with a police officer" is much easier to enforce and make arrests for (with consequent fines, oh YES!!) than actually stopping drug dealing and murder. You could always join Homeland Security and spend TWO YEARS investigating bootleg CD's.
The farmers marker vendors are usually also easy to beat up and muscle around. So it's a win-win, huh?

go to youtube and look up war on the shore 2012. you will find the videos that these own college student put up showing cans and bottles flying at deputies on the scene. it is unfortunate that pepper spray had to be used, but it only takes a few idiots to ruin it for everyone. these are clearly videos posted by the students themselves.

I came to this town in 1986 as a farm boy from Howard County. Considering my perspective, this was a big place. I remember in 87-88? when the SU campus police received permission to carry weapons. I was a really good kid who attended some H U G E "social gatherings" and even hosted our own on at 111 East Church Street. There were HUNDREDS of people there. We drank, we smoked dope, we screamed into the night, all innocent. Along with our guests we cleaned up and had very few problems with the adults. Fast forward to 2012 I remained in the area receiving my M.Ed. from SU and am just retiring. Where were the SU police in this incident? As a student council member I voted to give them the authority to police the students off campus. This is standard practice now around the country. As long as you are a student, you must abide by the rules set by Salisbury University. Having been here the past 26 years and actually living this life I can say that from what I know first hand (beyond the limitations of this questionable "news blog") this assembly is not a big deal. Okay, homeowners have to deal with a little bit of foolishness... So what? The police need to calm the "frick" (I know the rules of the website) down, take a calming breath and go do some real police work. Like I said, I used to live on East Church St... I have seen first hand the foolishness that went down during the height of the crack era. I used to TEACH at East Salisbury School. I have visited the neighborhoods, been into the homes, and made the SS reports. There are MUCH more serious things for the Salisbury Police Deptartment to worry about.

If Anon 8:42 really did earn a M.Ed he should know it's Atticus, not Atticas, Finch. But what do you expect from a public university?

Anonymous said...

So Imclain tell me.....what should have happened? Should the people who had a window broken (which prompted the call to police) just ignored the unruly crowd because they are harmless college students? When the police arrived and the students threw cans and bottles at them....should they have stood by and let the students break the law.....disordely conduct, disturbance of the public peace, malicious destruction of property? They police behaved appropriately and in accordance with their general orders and the law. They frrquently roll up on Isabella st., Delaware Ave., Booth st., and more to do their jobs. O.C. spray is deployed if necessary but more often than not crowds in those areas aren't violent. More often they are groups of people just hanging out - maybe getting a little loud. A complaint prompts a police response and a simple request to quiet down is enough. You are apparently a cop hater. Nothing they do can be right in your eyes. Sad for you. Even though there are a handful of overzealous police officers, most are good, decent people who do a fine job at serving their communities.

7:05, it is private property owned by the development complex. The owners OK'd all of this, as long as kids stayed out of the streets, which they did for the most part.

Please, learn the facts.

I think if I was maced I would either drop my beer or throw it at the a$$ that had just maced me, thereby making the "aftermath" look like it did. If you look at the streets before the police showed up, there might be 2 cans on the ground. Go to Church and Booth streets, guys, and fight some real crime.

Anonymous said...

Atticus your mentality has led to this type of incident. The local residents had to deal with some follishness so what? Really? Foolishness? Breaking a window is not foolishness! These idiot students need to be held accountable for their actions. Society cannot continue to overlook their behavior that degrades entire communities. It is the job of law enforcement to enforce the laws - not ignore violations because they are committed by college students. You are apparently a liberal. Policies enacted by those with midsets similar to your own have been directly responsible for the current condition of society. It's a shame you coudn't have kept yours in Howard County.

theyre always hoodlums before& after a game

To all those yapping about why the police acted the way they did, and ahhh, poor college kids, I would imagine the residents on that street called the police and then expected their peace to be preserved. A large young crowd, hot day, and alcohol is a mixture for trouble. Then you have the loud music, public drinking, underage drinking, safety issue created by having so many blocking the city street, and undoubtedly an assortment of acts that would constitute disorderly conduct or disorderly intoxication.

No doubt that crowd was directed to disperse, a lawful order, and didn't. The police using the spray just as a K-9 officer would use his dog, sprayed the pepper spray not into the faces of individuals, but directed it into the air. People stupid enough to stand still were affected. Those clever enough to start moving from the area had no problems.

Professional, effective operation.

Waaa Waaa Waaa. I think it is funny as heck. They want to have a field party. Take it to a field. As for the students spending mommy and daddies money majoring in intoxication the job market sucks. A degree from S.U. carries no weight. Grow up. Stop acting like your 15. Was a permit issued. Did anyone have the sense to meet with the mayor or police and tell them what was planned. You are a guest in this community.

8:53...at least I'm man enough to use my name. I know it wouldn't be hard to find me, especially for the police, with all their resources (two cops in my family, so I know they have access to info that would absolutely ASTOUND the average citizen). But if and when I have something to say, "anonymous" never occurs to me. Further, I DO recognize the necessity of the police. But every time theres a gathering of young kids, the cops show up and "disperse" them. A broken window COULD have been an accident (ever broke a window in YOUR house?) and NOT "malicious", but it's easier to start kicking kids asses and pepper spraying hundreds if theres some "malicious" stuff going on. And the throwing of bottles? I would have thrown a few too, if I got maced for standing around listening to music and enjoying the day with my friends, ESPESCIALLY if the owners of the property okayed it (reference post 11:27). People are reaching the limit of tolerance for 5'6" cops acting like public masters, and not SERVANTS. And its always just "a handful" of bad cops, huh? A "bad apple", huh? Thats why there are THOUSANDS of videos showing "bad apples" killing, beating, and macing handcuffed suspects, unarmed women, children. AND THOUSANDS of court cases documenting the same stuff, to include murder, bribery, extortion, rape, assault, etc. Wake up now --- your dream is over.

I am in no way condoning the feral behavior of these students but why don't the police drive across town to Church Street?Or Booth Street?Or Decatur Ave or any of the other former working class neighborhoods that have become ghettos? You are guaranteed to see loitering, public drinking, drug deals and truancy not to mention domestics.Guess it would be too difficult.

1:30... let me answer your question about why the cops are not on Church Street. They got a call to respond to this party where there were minors drinking and drunk kids running in the road in front of moving vehicles, they had to respond to that, meanwhile while there were three agencies backed up because of these kids, extra officers were brought on to maintain the rest of the city until these cops were freed.

They were given permission to party at this property, however per the landowner what happened was not expected. The party has NEVER been this big. Windows were broken, accident or not it is destruction of someone elses property and illegal. Underage drinking is not tolerated and shouldn't be. If one minor was injured at this party the parents would be whining that the cops weren't there protecting these kids.

A warning was sent to these kids, because they were drunk and couldn't hear it is not the officers fault. There were many cans of beer thrown at the officers for the mear threat that pepper spray would be used. you see videos that these hoodrats put on youtube to make a name for themselves. Well there is two sides to every story and while it may look to you like innocent kids having innocent fun, be one of those 10 cops that were surrounded by 1500 people. You can see the cop in the 3rd video being surrounded and harrassed by these kids.

I talked to several people who are not college students and were at that party. Let me first point out that most of them were minors. Also, each and every one of them said although they did not hear a warning over loud speaker they did see the cans being held in the air and could hear the officer yelling he would spray in 5 minutes when a lot of people in the crowd starting throwing their drinks at him. Each one of them also said they were not affected by the spray as they left the scene immediately.

I think what some of the adults around in the community and those commenting on this post need to understand that this was not just a "house party". War on the Shore is an annual event supporting the lacrosse team. This gathering was in Cedar Crossing aka New Zoo where it is 100% student housing. ALL STUDENTS. How that could be bothersome to others I don't know. A day later and all the trash as been picked up. BY STUDENTS.

Older numbers show somewhere around 800,000 law enforcement officers working in the US(and this is from 2006 so I doubt the number has DECREASED). Kind of gives some perspective to the THOUSANDS of "bad apples"... How 'bout HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of good cops? But that doesn't make for good media fun does it?
