Maryland Bill Would Ban Smoking In Vehicles With Kids

ANNAPOLIS — Supporters of a ban on smoking inside vehicles with child passengers say the proposed legislation is strictly a health concern while opponents say it’s yet another attack on individual rights.

The full Senate opened debate Tuesday on the legislation, which would fine drivers as much as $50 if they or a passenger are caught smoking in a vehicle with a passenger 8 or younger.

The House Environmental Matters Committee heard testimony Tuesday on a similar bill.

Another waste of tax payers money. Why not put all effort into figuring out this economy thing first you know the one thing that effects the entire world......

Because once your 8yrs old, your lungs are immune to it?
Seriously stupid law, just ban adults smoking in cars with children and be done with it.

As it should be. I'm tired of breathing other peoples smoke as they pass me on the roadways.

And how will the cops determine if the kid is 8 or younger? With kids today and all the steroids in food, kids 8yrs old look 20yrs old...

Just like they do to determine if your high while driving? you know red eyes... NO, not red eyes from allergies or the wind or you rubbing them, no its red because yuor high...

Not going anywhere! This law would interfere with gang bangers riding around with their loud rap music and signifying. Most of them are too young to smoke.

How would they enforce this. I am not against the concept but don't see how it would be an effective law. Will we have to carry birth certificates for proof of age? Like everyone else, with all the issues facing the State, and this is what they focus their time on in Annapolis, we need to vote all of these idiots out!

I don't smoke but although I agree you should not smoke around kids I am just so sick and tired of legislators trying to rule EVERY little part of our lives. They should just concentrate on balancing the budget and stop trying to micro manage our lives!

I am in total agreement with 9:35. It is just another power grab from an out of control government If this passes what is next, a law passed that adds a separate fine for committing any other violation if a child is on board, maybe like the feds and raise the age from 8 to 25, you know like a child up to age 25 can be on your insurance.

This is nuisance legislation. What about the more serious personal infringements of others rights to clean air. Pooping should not be permitted in public restrooms. Why can't people poop before they leave home rather than gross out innocent people using a restroom for quick whiz? Methane gas can't be good for you. Also, kids can poop their pants in the car when adults are present. Why can't adults smoke?

Bad things happen. Sometimes you breathe air thats not quite as good for you. Sometimes you fall off your bike as well. I am tired of the government trying to stop every single bad event from occuring. This is just another law for cops to pull over who ever they want for a useless crime such as your seatbelt. Listen if I do not want to be safe in my car what gives you tghe right tell me to be? When did this stop being our choice?

This irks me because of the limited number of children it effects. If politicians were really concerned about children they would be looking at our food supply which is poisoned with GMOs and antibiotics.
We have animals for food being raised in confined, disease infested conditions which cause many to die daily. The ones that are left standing (sick but disease hasn't fully caught up with them yet) are still slaughtered for food.
This is what needs to be addressed but it won't because Big Agri business and the food lobby industry is too powerful.
