A 27-year-old Salisbury man that was convicted on counterfeit currency and handgun charges by a Wicomico County Circuit Court jury on Tuesday hanged himself within hours of returning to the Eastern Correctional Institution, according to state public safety and corrections officials.

Matthew Alan Schirling, 27, was facing up to 60 years of incarceration after the jury convicted him on eight counts of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, manufacture and possession of counterfeit currency and conspiracy to manufacture and possess counterfeit currency.

Prison officers found Schirling in his cell around 6 a.m., according to the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services. Four officers administered CPR and continued until medical personnel arrived.

He was pronounced dead a short time later.

Schirling was one of two men arrested in February after law enforcement officers seized $13,370 in counterfeit $100 and $50 bills from a Caroline Street home. William Kurtis Cogdill pleaded guilty to one count of counterfeit currency manufacturing during a Wicomico County Circuit Court hearing in September.

A sentencing hearing for Cogdill is scheduled for Friday.

It's not a jail, it's a State Prison.

It was Cogdill's house people, which is something the article DOES NOT mention...it was his stuff and Matt got the blame for it because of Matt's own past...the mother and daughter who damn near killed the 3 yr old got less time than what Matt was facing and he didn't hurt anyone but himself...I don't understand our Judicial system...Today there is a family grieving for him so please be considerate of that fact before posting to this story, they did nothing wrong to deserve to read negative comments....Matt's been held in solitary confinement for almost a year without visitors...can you imagine how you'd feel not being around anyone for that long and in a 6x6 cell??? He had to have gone mentally insane...ECI officials played head games with him for the time he was there...good thing he's not my brother, son, husband or father because I'd have lawyer's all over ECI for the treatment they provided to Matt...but then I would have been smart enough to had gotten the lawyers involved before it got to where Matt felt like he had to Kill himself as the best way out...ECI treated him horribly, not that prison is suppose to be a playground for the unbehaved but they didn't have to do to him what they did either...I'm not making excuses for Matt...he made bad decisions in his life, hung out with the wrong people and got bad advice, which he was paying the price for...but it doesn't add up to treating him the way they did...he made mistakes and hurt only himself...no one around him...Matt, God Bless you now..I know what your life was like for at least the last 15 years and I pray you have the peace you so longed for in this life...we will miss you very much....Love always, the family...

What headgames? He's been at JCI for over a year. He violated his parole twice. You are making baseless accusations, while complaining about how innocent he was. No man that joins a gang is innocent. End of story. He was guilty, he played the game, and he couldn't handle the results. No rationalization can hide that.

Most guards are not smart enough to do head games. Some use their fingers when they do count. lol
