Former Ocean City Police Officer Earl Campbell, (via e-mail) corresponded with the City Council respectfully denying their offer to reimburse the Campbell Family the more than $6,000.00 for a surgery on his K-9 Charlie.
"It's not about the money" said Mr. Campbell. More importantly, Mr. Campbell would prefer Ocean City consider enacting new legislation for the well being of future K-9 Dogs/Officers down the road.
To the Campbell Family, thank you so much for your unconditional love for Charlie. May you enjoy the finest Christmas Holiday Ever and our very best wishes for the new year.

That's an honorable man.
I think he made a mistake. Charlie should have been taken care of by OC from the start, and not out of his pocket. OC retroactively wanted to fix the situation... Why not take it?
If not for him, then at least for a K9 charity.
Seems the Ocean City Council thinks more of a dog than it does it's employees. They offer to pay over $6,000 for surgery for a dog that is retired, yet I believe it was Joe Hall, Council President, that said when an employee leaves the city "he wants to be done with them".
No mistake here. He started off saying it wasn't about the money. It's the rule of law or lack thereof that caused suffering that is the case here. Plain and simple. Man of his WORD speaks volumes.
I can't say it enough. Mr. Earl Campbell is a class act.
Yes, He has represented himself as "quite a guy !" I for one am impressed & I know that is not his intent.
It is the principal of the matter peopl---that is why He will not take the money! He wants protection for who follow in Charlies footsteps!
Thanks for standing up to them Mr Campbell!!
Charlie was forced to leave the City ! We should all be greatful for these K-9 dogs---they will help save many lives & uncover crime for the protection of our Community. They surely deserve being taken care of for the protection they give to all!!!!
Excellent decision Earl !!! You da man and I hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas and a prosperous, great New Year !!!
Way to go Earl for standing up to the OCPD administration for your beliefs and proving that everyone can't be bought off! Plus the taxpayer complaining about his tax dollars being wasted should be happy now!
I agree with 8:28. Let's face it people, Ocean City's council would not have offered to reimburse Earl if it were not for his story being publicized last week. Now that detailed truth of the incident was exposed and out in the open for the public to read about, it seems obvious to me and others that council clearly has ulterior motives and is 'attempting' to deceitfully display to the public how fair & compassionate they are. It's to little, too late! The fair & appropriate action should have been taken several weeks ago.
Hey 5:50, the point is the dogs injuries were while it was employed. The dog would still be "employed" if it weren't for the injuries.
He stood up for what was right, and he didn't do it for the money. But when it is offered, why turn it down? Accepting would not be in bad character. He would be just as honorable, and his bank account wouldn't have taken a $6,000 hit that wasn't his to take. He did the right thing in paying for the surgery. And the OC Council did the right thing in offering the reimbursement. Anything in between is great but not accepting the payment is a little self-righteous in my humble opinion.
Not to mention he's unemployed now too because he chose to use his job as part of his moral ground. There are ways to right wrongs without resigning from one's job, especially when the economy is so bad. This was a major and unfortunate misunderstanding, and I would not have left my job until I at least had another one lined up in the same position, with a family to support I'm not convinced he did the right thing.
In my opinion, Earl is a fool for not taking the money.
Come on, folks, while I think he was completely entitled to take the money, he's wise not to because sickos would have said that's what it's about.
Campbell got OC to do the right thing - provide for canine officers as they would for other members of the force. Those bozos treat equipment better than they did that dog who served them.
Show Campbell support. Offer him a job. Send him a job lead. Donate to the humane society. Start a K-9 fund for OC. Support a scholarship for the kids of slain officers.
Be like Campbell and do something positive, put your money where your mouth is instead of b*tching.
Merry Christmas to Earl Campbell and his family, including Charlie, for all of them made a sacrifice for their community.
