Outside interests have already spent more on congressional travel this year than any other since travel reforms took effect in 2007, spurred by spending in trips over the August recess.
So far in 2011, private organizations have spent $4.7 million to send lawmakers, staff and family members on trips. August was the most-expensive month in more than six years for sponsors of travel by members of Congress and staff, and a Roll Call story out today says it was the costliest month ever when only member travel is counted.
August also included some of the most expensive individual trips we have seen. The International Conservation Caucus Foundation paid $30,708 to send Rep. John Carter (R-Texas) and his wife to South Africa for 10 days, the second-costliest trip since 2000, which LegiStorm's records begin. Eight of the 15 most expensive trips in LegiStorm's database have come this year.
