An Alabama law meant to crack down on illegal immigration may be so effective that the state won't have enough immigrant labor to fill its labor requirements. Immigrant farm and construction workers, as well as their legal citizen relatives, are reportedly said to be leaving the state in such high numbers that some employers may have trouble filling openings if the economy picks up.

I'm moving to Alabama to get a job.
Makes sense to me! What a great opportunity for real folks. I talked to someone this morning who went to Louisiana to work and i am sure they are making more money than around here.
Sure you are, 12:00. I'd like to see people on unemployment doing the hard work for low pay that illegals do. The farmers in Alabama and Georgia (where a similar law is in effect) can't get enough labor to do their jobs. Like it or not, we need foreigners to do this work. Let's change our immigration laws to allow them to come here legally.
Something tell me that won't be a problem for long
12:26, I bet more people would line up if those same employers simply followed the same rules of supply and demand that the rest of us are stuck with. Funny how the rules change when it comes to labor markets. If you have a low supply of available workers, you need to work harder (raise wages) to attract new employees, not cheat the system by hiring illegals.
It's about time some states decided to step up to the plate. Legal=ok, illegal=go back to where you came from!
12:26 Why would we need to change the laws...they come here anyway?
That just stupid 12:26. So it's ok to suck of the system just because you don't want to work hard.
To 12:49, the employers who hire illegals are following the law of supply and demand. They have a demand for labor and there is a supply of it south of the border. The government, however, steps in to stop the free market from working. The government prohibits the supply of labor from reacting to the demand for it. As a limited government conservative who believes in the free market, I oppose the government's interference in the free market. Why do you support it?
To 12:52, I agree they come here anyway. However, many of the problems caused by illegal immigration are caused in response to the ways these immigrants get around the law. If you had a legal way for them to come here, you'd see many of the problems associated with illegal immigration go away. Changing the law would be better for both employers and employees and would reduce government interference in the market and government restrictions on our individual liberty.
I'm sure they have many prisons full of able bodied people. Put them out in the fields and make them work for their shelter, food and healthcare. If they don't work they don't eat.
To 12:55, please point out where I ever said it was OK to suck off the system. I didn't. I don't support welfare or even unemployment "insurance." But facts are facts. Today, the only people willing to work in many of these ag jobs are foreigners. Since there's no legal way for them to get here, let's change the law to allow them to come here legally and assist our economy.
We aren't going to end welfare or unemployment insurance any time soon, so let's introduce a workable guest-worker program or create visas for low-skilled workers to enter the country.
1:38 hit the nail on the head! Why allow law breakers to enter this country to work when we already have enough inmates here that could do the same job .
1:43 there are plenty of low skilled non workers sitting on their cans collecting a check from the government in some form or another. GET OFF THE SYSTEM AND GET A JOB OR YOU GET NO HELP FROM US.It's a hand up. Not a hand out.
