Build It And They Will Come
Parking is either free or very inexpensive. It just takes some vision to start filling back the empty spots on the Plaza and people will come.
What kind of business do you think would enhance traffic on the Plaza?

Either a pharmacy or fast food place? The area could certainly use a McDonalds or Rite Aid.
Bars,Pubs, Restaurants!
A "bent and dent" type of inexpensive grocery store maybe?
A row of shops selling "not new" items?
I keep harping on the fact that we need a nice bakery with reasonable prices like the one that is on RT. 50 just about 3 miles on this side of Cambridge. They make wonderful bread, rolls, several types of danish pastry and you can get a good cup of coffee as well. They don't have a large amount each day, but what they have is wonderful. We do have a couple of places that have similar things, but not really user friendly here in Salisbury and in my opinion a bit pricey. If anyone is a good pastry chef they need to go over, take a look and open up one similar on the downtown plaza or on the east side of Salisbury!
Are you kidding, these people can't afford to shop anywhere but there. They aren't going to stop for a latte or bruch. Exactly what type of crowd are you trying to attract. Maybe we could move the goodwill and salvation army next door, then open a soup kitchen and shelter to top it off.
For starters the entire area must
undergo a major clean up. Downtown
just looks way too dirty, old,
and somewhat dangerous. Some ideas
Jogging/Biking Route
Abercrombie & Fitch/Hollister
Sports Bars
A Coffee Shop
Every cool downtown area that I have gone to has a trendy pub with good homemade sandwiches and nice nite life. Nice addition to market st and brew river. Make it a good place for lunch meetings. A true bakery would be nice too.
Medical marijauna cafe's up and down main street and in between lots of eateries for the munchies.
I agree with the pharmacy & a fast food resturant or pizza parlor. Any sandwich shop with "reasonable" prices. Just because you're on the Plaza doesn't mean you double prices. Not everyone who works downtown is a lawyer or rich. Something for up peons.
Any place that would serve alcohol is doomed. We have repeatedly been shown that bars and such attract a very undesirable crowd.
Something cultural would be nice but I don't think you have enough people in the area to support it. Unless it involved pumpkin chunkin or something along those lines.
To 12:36 I am a well-off retired senior and can afford to shop anywhere in Salisbury. Shopping at thrift stores is my hobby and is really fun. You never know what you will find; sometimes just that unique one of a kind item. Maybe you should try it before you make remarks about those who do.
A casino is the only thing that will bring them
Put affordable things ie. clothes, misc. items and food that people will and can buy, it could happen. Quit making it just a place to go see a lawyer or the judge and it won't. The only things downtown that bring people together are the library, lawyer offices and the courthouse. Outside of that there's the art gallery, i think one restaurant, channel 47 and a couple other places. Downtown only targets a specific crowd. Anyone in business knows you have to market and sell to a certain range of people, and in our city, it's only to a specific crowd.
I'm with you 5:07. I too can afford to shop wherever I please but love to go to thrift shops. I am so not into the Made in China stuff sold in stores like Bed Bath and Beyond. I much prefer European "knick knacks" and Made in the USA housewares of days gone by. The only place to find these items are at thrift stores.
