(NEW YORK) — New York City politicians called for a ban on "non-essential" helicopter flights over the city Wednesday as investigators studied weather reports and examined instruments from a downed helicopter for clues to its fatal crash in the East River.
U.S. Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., and five state and city legislators said the crash underscored the danger of helicopter flights. They called for a total ban on tourist flights and pleasure trips by privately owned aircraft at Manhattan's three heliports.

People are killed everyday in NYC in car crashes. Why don't they ban all automobiles in the city?
Stupid politicians ...
What a joke! It's more dangerous to walk in most parts of NYC than to ride in a helo. Knee-jerk reaction to an accident. They are called accidents because they happened without being planned.
They have been waiting for something like this crash to happen. They are trying to reduce the ability of people to be independantly free to travel.
Typical, knee-jerk liberal Democrat reaction. Also a job killer.
It's incredibly ignorant and an alarmist attitude to ban something like this.
The Tour Helo's are only after making money, and safety takes a second seat.Comparing auto's to helo's is like the old apple and orange comparison. These helo;s buzz around NYC and NJ without too much reguard for anything. They are aloud to fly tours when White House VIP's or UN VIP's are near. Air Traffic Control can not even control all of them since there are so many. These helo's want to fly where they want, when they want, or else they complain. Safety needs to come first instead of money.
