MADERA, Calif. (KFSN) -- A small medical marijuana grow is causing a big uproar in the North Valley. A Madera family says they are concerned over their safety because neighbors are growing pot plants in their backyard.
Madera Police say they have their hands tied with this one, at least for now.
Miguel Flores is worried about his 6-year-old daughter, Savannah. He fears she's being exposed to the smell of marijuana plants growing just over his backyard fence.
Flores said he worries about safety since the grow is right across the street from an elementary school. "That's the biggest issue, the school and the kids," Flores said. "If something happens, if they get robbed... it's a big if but still it's a possibility something can happen."
Flores is not alone, his next-door neighbor, who also cares for Savannah, said she wonders what will happen if crooks ever try to steal the plants.

get over it people, soon it will be legal and then what ?? Heck "CLOSE" to schools..heck you got killers / drug dealers / sex offenders " not yet caught" / people with guns and shooting each other near schools and living and or working in the school systems and they are worried about a little weed ...wake up and smell the weed..
I would think the thieves would just steal the plants. if that had always been farmland, then the farmer has been using fertilizer there before, and the "smell" would be the same, if not a little sweeter come harvest time! What's the big wup here?
I think he needs to tell little Savannah to quit stealing that farmer's pot plants, or she'll get shot!

I don't really have any problem with pot, and I am not one to regulate but......I can see the writers point in terms of the proximity to the school. Are there safeguards in place to ensure that the kids wont pick a bud? They should make restrictions on the locations of the pot fields, and some other safety mechanisms, maybe fences. The probability of them being robbed is high, although, on the flip side, one of the benefits of legalization is that you no longer have the gangs playing such a role because anybody can grow it. Demand goes down, price goes down, gangs go on to something else.
Not to worry. The city of Madera has a cheetos plantation right next door.

On the one hand a lot of conservatives are against regulation, on the other when something like this moves next door suddenly they want help. LOL. Make your mind up!
