Legal Complaint Says Same-Sex Dorms Are Gender Discrimination

WASHINGTON -- Do single-sex college dormitories amount to sex discrimination?

That's the question at the heart of a legal challenge to Catholic University's new policy for on-campus residence halls.

George Washington University public interest law professor John Banzhaf, who is perhaps best known for taking on the tobacco industry and junk food, has filed a legal complaint against Catholic University under the D.C. Human Rights Act.

"You can no more have dorms separated by gender than you could, for example, have Muslims and Jews in different dorms, or gay and straight students in different dorms," says Banzhaf.
