Mother Of 10: Kroger Manager Refused To Take My Mountain Of Coupons

Here's the latest dispatch from the front in the battle between the growing armies of extreme couponers and the beleaguered retailers who are beginning to fight back. An Atlanta-area mother of 10 children says a manager at her local Kroger just said no to taking her pile of clipped coupons.

The issue isn't about the 10 kids, which was their choice. Does a store manager have a right to tell anyone he will not accept coupons? I used to be a supermarket checker, and the "extreme couponers" could get on my nerves, but my job was to take them. Yes, coupons do present a lot of problems and work for the checkers, the front-end office, etc. Still, they're legitimate.

Don't get me wrong, I understand that it is the store's right to make certain rules, but are they legally allowed to make rules on a case by case situation? I mean, can they accept coupons from one customer but not the other just because of the amount? Wouldn't that be like profiling? Don't forget the other important thing... the store gets all of their money back from the coupon maker. I don't think it is right.

I'm on board with the "who the hell has ten kids?" people. If she has a job and a husband, I'll donate $200 to her favorite charity. BUT, if she's on welfare, then she has to get her tubes tied. Deal?

Yes, the store gets reimbursed, 1:30, but do you have any idea how much employee time is spend in sorting all those coupons out,sending them to the right manufacturer, etc. It's much more than a notion. If you count that employee time, the store really isn't making out too well.

since that inane program stores have already changed a lot of their coupon store cards and in store specials when combined with coupons along with the item per family policy
nothing is free people
and really who needs three hundred sticks of deodorant and a cord of toothbrushes
these promotions are seldom for fresh food items

Where to begin...coupons are nothing new, they have been around for a long long time. Just about all stores have dealt with them at one time or another so they should be able to process coupons better than some describe here.

Why must some of you insinuate that people that use coupons have to be black and/or on welfare?

If people want to save some money by using coupons they should be allowed to. In this economy I would expect their use to increase to offset the high cost of food.

Granted there are people that go to the extreme but so what? The store either accepts coupons or they don't accept coupons.

Saying someone is a 'habitual user of coupons' is not a good enough reason to refuse to honor coupons.

If a store wants to set up a policy of limited use of coupons that is their right. But not on an individual case.

Post a sign where customers can see it when entering the store and knowing your coupon policy.

That would save everyone from getting a headache.
