NEW YORK – Tens of thousands of unionized Verizon Communications Inc. workers from Massachusetts to Washington, D.C., went on strike early Sunday after they failed to agree on a new labor contract with the telecommunications company.
The Communications Workers of America said negotiations in Philadelphia and New York stalled Saturday night after Verizon continued to demand more than 100 concessions from workers and the unions refused to budge.

8:18 - I agree - as long as the replacements have green cards (our unemployed are perfectly happy drawing extended handouts - err unemployment checks. Only the teeming masses of illegals don't mind working.

True, Verizon made a profit, but the unit where the union slugs work is loosing money.
and they will come to an agreement where verizon will get rid of enough to cover what they want in benifits

these folks are picketing outside their offiec on route 50. drive by and see what is demanding more when the country is crumbling

The ones on 50 yells at the ones who gives them a thumbs down comments like "UP YOUR A$$ and KISS OUR A$$. They need to be fired if they dont like what they got now.
As a fact they need less. They voted for Obama but they do not want to be counted in his spread the wealth. Verizon raises rates at will and that is not spreading the wealth.
It's hard to fathom how anyone can go on a strike these days. One should be thankful just to have a job. There are the unions for you.
I am one of the "overpaid and underworked" people you seek to bash. Let me just say nothing can be farther from the truth, but until you have walked a mile in our shoes you could not begin to understand. Not one of the almost 300 people walking the line would argue that we don't make a good living. What we want is to be able to maintain our middle class lifestyle. It is what allows us to support local businesses, pay our share of taxes and raise our families. What Verizon seeks is to take this away from us while still profiting BILLIONS (yes thats with a B)of dollars. What we don't want is to join the ranks of people having to work multiple jobs to make ends meet and thereby watch our family life suffer as well. There are many unemployed on Delmarva and we recognize and support them too. If we join their ranks though how will we be able to continue to provide what we give back to our communities. Don't wish us ill will. Ask yourself shouldn't I want the same for myself and my family.
Becky, I do understand your point of view, and I would hope that you would not lose the benefits that Verizon has promised you. I am glad that you recognize that you 'make a good living." I have several friends who took the buyout option from Verizon, and they enjoy a very good retirement--far better than most. I hope that you can appreciate, though, that for the many people who do not have what you have, we don't understand any sort of protesting. Most of us make far less than Verizon employees and are thinking that if doesn't seem right to be marching when you do have a job--a good job. Think of all those out there who live almost a hand-to-mouth existence.

As long as keeping your benefits doesn't come with higher bills and more taxes with our verizon phone bill. Over the last several years I have seen such a rise in our phone bill that I have now gotten rid of my land line and use only my cell phone, however, now they are talking about doing away with unlimited plans to gain more profit. I'm one of the lucky ones who have two jobs because I can't make it on one. However, my benefit are meager in comparison to your's and I'm sorry to say I'm just glad to have a job, I would dare picket or strike when so many would want my job if I did go to work? Not sure how I feel on this subject just don't understand and would love to walk in your shoes if it meant only one job with better benefits then I curren have. Good luck.
My landline is only still on because I cannot get cell signal in my uber-rural area.Currently these people on strike have 100% employer paid healthcare-not even government employees get that!I agree Ivan Seidenberg and the other execs should feel the pain too but what is so wrong with asking employees to contribute a little bit towards their healthcare?It beats the alternative-no job or insurance at all.Did Dresser and Crown not teach us anything?
I drove past the union strikers today in my company truck and all the Verizon employee's cheered me...I work for the competition...LOL

Verizon, the nation's largest wireless carrier, has 196,000 workers; 135,000 are non-union.
At the center of the contract negotiations, which began June 22, are the costs of health care, pensions and work rules.
The company said union employees contribute nothing to their health care premiums.
The CWA said the concessions are unjustified and harsh, given that Verizon is highly profitable
I wish some employer would pay all of my health care premiums too. Sorry, you get no sympathy from me. 14 million unemployed. Most with NO health insurance, let alone someone paying premiums for them.
Just like taxpayers paying for government waste, verizon customers pay for yours.
I wish I was half as special as politicians and union members think they are. I would probably bitch about paying my share too.
