A federal jury convicted a retired Eastern Shore cardiologist Tuesday of health care fraud and related charges for placing unnecessary coronary stents in the arteries of dozens of patients, then billing private and public insurers hundreds of thousands of dollars for the procedures.
John R. McLean, 59, who surrendered his medical privileges at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in 2007 after a hospital investigation, faces a maximum of 35 years in prison at his sentencing, scheduled for Nov. 10,according to the Maryland U.S. attorney's office.
The verdict was reached after a two-week trial in Baltimore's U.S. District Court.

Greedy.
Doctors need to learn that they are no better than anyone else nor are they above the law. No matter how good they are at their profession that does not give them the right to take advantage of people and insurance companies to fatten their wallet. Unnecessary surgery? They had no thought for the patient. Just for their bank account.
Unfortunately, many doctors DO feel that they are better than others. Many I have spoken with site their extensive educational requirements. I personally, don't find their dedication any more palpable than any other profession. Their are people who feel above others everywhere. This man will get exactly what he deserves - prison time for defrauding the public for his own gain.
Hopefully they don't let this dude off easy. That is why I am so hesitant to even go to some of these doctors around here. What a greedy guy he was to ever do something like this. Probably had a drug problem going on and needed to support his habit.

What about PRMC. They made money on all those unecessary procedures. Sort of like the driver of the getaway car if you ask me...
I'd say a stint in prison is what this doctor needs.
PRMC is going to play the "hear no evil, see no evil" card to get out of paying for this one. I find it funny that he started doing unlawful procedures the same time Queen Peggy arrived. Makes you wonder what type of 'pep' talk she gave to the doctors at that joint, or what blind eye she turned when the $$$$$ rolled in.
Dear lawyer suing PRMC over this case, look for the Radiation Safety Meeting minutes from October 2002 to April 2003 and you'll have your smoking gun on when PRMC knew something was up.

10:48 Your right! Not only were patients exposed but so were docs and nurses. May still be exposed. PRMC is not clean in this and other violations. Known all over hospital that radiation levels in certain cath lab not acceptable!
But money will prevail!!!!
PRMC knew, they fired several cath lab employees who reported violations to corporate compliance (which were supposed to be anonymous). They made up false accusations about those individuals even though they had spotless records. The guy who was in charge of Human Resources (who I believe was released) probably destroyed those personnel files. There are a lot more individuals who should be investigated beyond Jack McLean. They have let people perform without valid Maryland licensing, they have let people perform procedures out of their scope of practice...the list goes on and on.
@4:43 PM He was not released, he was fired for sexual harassment. "Finally" What a sleeze he was. I think name was Kevin Carchiola or something like that. Yes, the firing of employees for reporting violations is a house wide problem. Doctors can do no wrong because they bring in the patients who in turn bring in the revenue. To hell with any violations that are broken. It is all about the mighty dollar when as far as the executives are concerned. Don't let them fool you, they tell you that you are supposed to report violations, but see what happens when you do. We as the care givers don't know who to turn to, who to trust. We really want to do the right thing but then again, PRMC knows that we have no where else to go for jobs and we feel threatened to just do the job and go home.
@11:02.....Kevin from HR made-up a false allegation of sexual harassment against me after I questioned his procedure for evaluating pay scales. I love the fact that he himself got the boot for it. Back in 2003-2006, that was a popular way for him to get rid of male workers and destroy their reputations. What a piece of garbage.
