State To Reconsider Bay Bridge Toll Hikes

Transportation secretary tells senators she is working on a new proposal

Public opposition to the planned tripling of tolls for the Bay Bridge and other facilities is causing state transportation officials to reconsider some of the rate increases.

Testifying before a state Senate committee Tuesday, Maryland Transportation Secretary Beverley Swaim-Staley said her department is listening to the public and commercial interests.

"The final product will be different from what we initially put out," she said after Tuesday's hearing in Annapolis.

Hint: Here's your new plan;

The Bay bridge is now operating at a $10m profit each year. Be thankful for that.

Your other toll projects are running in the red. Price each of them individually to make budget.

Put the $10m profits from the Bay Bridge in a trust fund for a future span or expansion. And don't steal it for something else.

Better yet, just give the money back to the Eastern Shore who generated in the first place, and reduce the toll to make budget, because historically it has been stolen.

Case closed.
